Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Brendan Bittner

Quincy Falls To Host #1 Rockhurst, 1-0

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team saw an early second-half goal provide the difference as No. 1 Rockhurst blanked Quincy, 1-0, on Friday (Sept. 30) in Great Lakes Valley Conference action in Kansas City.

Despite Quincy (4-3-2, 2-3-2 GLVC) out-shooting the hosts, 14-9, including 10-5 in the second half, the visiting Hawks were not able to find the back of the net.

The teams played an even first half with both squads firing four total shots with QU putting three on frame. Logan Feldmann made six saves in the game and another shot was cleared off the line by the Rockhurst defense.

In the 49th minute, Rockhurst (8-0-1, 6-0-1 GLVC) scored the only goal it needed as Gianluca Bottoni put a pass on the head of Kaleb Jackson, who scored the eventual game-winner from 10 yards out.

QU had more chances in the second half. Redshirt-sophomore midfielder Kyle Fraser (Helston, U.K./Helston Community Prep) ripped a bending free kick from 25 yards in the 63rd minute, but it just missed the upper 90.

In the 64th minute, play got chippy on the field as both teams had a player shown a red card, Quincy a straight red and Rockhurst a second yellow.

With 10 men on both sides, Quincy had the better opportunities, but could not cash in. A shot by junior forward David Geerling (St. Louis, Mo./CBC/SLU) was saved by Feldman in the 69th minute. Senior midfielder Taylor Reis (Quincy, Ill./Quincy Notre Dame) struck the crossbar in the 72nd minute as did redshirt-freshman defender Anthony Christante (Fenton, Mo./Vianney) in the 84th minute.

Quincy had a flurry of shots late with Christante missing high in the 86th minute, Feldmann stopping a Reis effort in the 88th and redshirt-senior midfielder Tommy Koerper (St. Louis, Mo./Trinity Catholic) having his blocked 40 seconds later.

In a last-gasp effort, a throw-in by junior defender Conner Sendobry (St. Louis, Mo./CBC/UW-Green Bay) bounced through the box and junior forward Artan Emini (Yorkville, Ill.) had a free header, but it missed just wide with 15 seconds left.

QU led in corner kicks, 4-0, in the game, and had a 7-3 lead in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Nate Griffin (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) stopped two shots.

The Hawks will now head to Liberty, Mo. to take on William Jewell on Sunday (Hawktober 2) at 2:30 p.m.
