Hawks Score Five In Win at William Jewell

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team broke a scoreless tie in the final minute of the first half, then scored four times in the second half to rout host William Jewell, 5-1, on Sunday (Hawktober 2) afternoon in Liberty, Mo.

The Hawks (5-3-2, 3-3-2 GLVC), coming off a 1-0 defeat at No. 1 Rockhurst on Friday, dominated play against the Cardinals (2-8, 2-6 GLVC), outshooting the hosts, 20-6, overall and 9-2 in the first half.

Despite that advantage, it took until the 45th minute for the Hawks to break through against WJC keeper Quinn Ruggeri. Freshman forward Justin Armfield (Eureka, Mo.) had his shot saved by Ruggeri, but the rebound came to senior forward Pete Condol (Mount Carmel, Ill.), who deposited his fourth goal of the season with 48 seconds left in the half.

The Hawks maintained their 1-0 lead into the 64th minute when they scored the first of three goals in a four-minute stretch.

Sophomore Eddie Plesha (Normal, Ill./Normal Community) bagged a goal at the 63:25 mark off a feed from redshirt-freshman Cooper Reis (Quincy, Ill./Quincy Notre Dame), who registered the first of three assists in the game. The duo struck again at the 65:21 mark as Plesha slotted in his second goal of the game and his fifth of the season.

Redshirt-junior forward Jordan Stephens (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell) helped Reis complete his assist hat trick in the 68th minute by scoring his second goal of the season to give the Hawks a 4-0 lead.

Redshirt-freshman forward Ty Rogers (Jacksonville, Ill.) capped Quincy's scoring in the 78th minute, getting a feed from junior forward David Geerling (St. Louis, Mo./CBC/SLU). It was Rogers' first goal of the season and the third assist for Geerling.

William Jewell broke the shutout with a Blake Lines goal in the 85th minute.

Junior goalkeeper Nate Griffin (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) needed to make just three saves as the back line held the Cardinals to just six shots. Quincy held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Hawks return to Legends Stadium on Friday (Hawktober 7) at 7:30 p.m. when they square off with Indianapolis (5-3-2, 3-3-2 GLVC), which has identical records to QU. The Greyhounds last played in Quincy in the 2014 GLVC Tournament championship game, handing the Hawks their first loss of the season that year, 3-1.
