UIndy Scores In Overtime To Defeat Hawks

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team saw its 1-0 lead slip away in the waning moments of regulation before Indianapolis was able to come away with a 2-1 win in overtime at Legends Stadium on Friday (Hawktober 7) night.

The Hawks (5-4-2, 3-4-2 GLVC) and Greyhounds (6-3-2, 4-3-2 GLVC) came into Friday's game with identical records and sitting in a tie for seventh in the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings.

The Hawks were able to get on the board late in the first half when redshirt-freshman forward Justin Armfield (Eureka, Mo.) won a turnover in the final third and slipped a short pass to redshirt-junior forward Jordan Stephens (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell). Stephens took a couple touches and drove his shot off the keeper's hands and into the side netting to give QU a 1-0 lead. Stephens now has three goals on the year and Armfield has two assists.

Quincy looked like it was going to hold onto the lead even late into the second half as the defense was able to stop the UIndy attack and junior keeper Nate Griffin (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) made a couple of outstanding diving efforts to keep the 'Hounds out.

That changed in the 89th minute as Casey Zimmerman played a through-ball that James Jenkins was able to corral near the end line and scoot it just past Griffin from a short angle for the equalizer.

The Greyhounds out-shot the Hawks, 16-8, for the game and 9-1 in the second half as they put the Hawks on their back heels.

Just one minute, 57 seconds into the overtime period, Indianapolis produced the game-winner as Evan Smith lifted a sharp ball into the box and Jenkins was able to power in a header from 12 yards.

Griffin made five saves in the game while UIndy keeper Miles Palmer had one save.

The Hawks will look to regroup on Sunday (Hawktober 9) at 2:30 p.m. when they play Saint Joseph's at Legends Stadium.
