Hawks Handle Saint Joseph's, 3-1, on Sunday

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team bounced back from an early Saint Joseph's goal, scoring three unanswered to defeat the Pumas, 3-1, on Sunday (Hawktober 9) afternoon at Legends Stadium.

Redshirt-freshman forward Ty Rogers (Jacksonville, Ill.) scored the equalizer and the go-ahead goal before redshirt-senior midfielder Tommy Koerper (St. Louis, Mo./Trinity Catholic) deposited a penalty kick for insurance.

The Hawks (6-4-2, 4-4-2 GLVC) were on their back heels early in the game as the Pumas (1-10, 1-8 GLVC) were able to establish some possession. SJC opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Nick Cossyleon played a ball to Charlie Mann, who dribbled a few times and scored from 12 yards out.

After the goal, the Hawks settled into their possession style play and were able to control the game in the SJC end.

Despite their control over the game, the Hawks were not able to generate many quality chances in the first half until the 41st minute.

Senior midfielder Taylor Reis (Quincy, Ill./Quincy Notre Dame) played a ball into the box that redshirt-junior forward Jordan Stephens (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell) was able to get a boot on to send Rogers into a one-on-one with the keeper. Rogers calmly slotted his shot into the lower right corner to tie the game at 1-1. Stephens now has three assists on the season.

The game was 1-1 going into halftime before the Hawks were able to take the lead in the 57th minute. Reis played the ball out wide for redshirt-junior wing back Michael Timmermann (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell), who swung in a cross that Rogers neatly volleyed past SJC keeper Adam Whybrow for the goal. Rogers now has three goals on the year while Reis added his team-leading fourth assist and Timmermann his second.

In the 70th minute, it was Rogers again creating havoc in the box, drawing a foul that led to a penalty kick. Koerper stepped up and delivered his first goal of the season.

On the other end, redshirt-junior Nate Griffin (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) was called on to make five saves, including four in the second half. He made a sterling individual effort on a breakaway by Callum Olpin in the 68th minute.

Quincy had a 17-9 edge in shots, including an 11-3 advantage in the first half. QU also maintained a 10-2 lead in corner kicks.

The Hawks will return to the field on Friday (Hawktober 14) when they travel to Lewis for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
