Hawks Stun #16 Drury With Three Goals in Final 10 Minutes

QUINCY, Ill. – Sophomore forward Eddie Plesha (Normal, Ill./Normal Community) scored twice in a two-minute span late in the second half and senior forward Pete Condol (Mount Carmel, Ill.) drilled the overtime game-winner as the QU men's soccer team stunned previously-undefeated No. 16 Drury on Sunday (Sept. 25) afternoon at Legends Stadium.

The Hawks (4-2-2, 2-2-2 GLVC) trailed the Panthers in the sixth minute as Ben Bruce converted an easy finish in the box off a pass from Charles Guelly.

The Panthers (7-1, 5-1 GLVC) took that lead into halftime despite Quincy outshooting them, 7-4, in the first half.

QU kept up their possession and pressure in the second half and senior midfielder Taylor Reis (Quincy, Ill./Quincy Notre Dame) provided the equalizer in the 55th minute as he found free space off a pass from Plesha and buried a shot from just inside the edge of the box. He now has a team-high five goals.

In the 62nd minute Drury's Ivan Borka smashed a shot off the crossbar and Guelly played the rebound nicely off the volley to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead. Less than three minutes later, David Cross headed in a rebound off a saved shot by Antoine Vial to stretch the Panthers' lead to 3-1.

Quincy continued to pepper Drury goalkeeper Nicholas Helin in the second half, firing 13 shots on goal in the game.

Plesha cut the deficit in half in the 84th minute, getting behind the defense on a through-ball from Reis and slotting it past Helin. It was Reis' second assist of the season.

Less than two minutes later, Plesha struck again as Condol fed him a pass and the sophomore buried it in the back of the net to tie the game at 3-3.

On the Hawks' first chance of the overtime period, Condol provided the game-winner. The senior received a pass from Plesha and smashed his shot off Helin's body and the deflection came in just under the crossbar, sending the team chasing after Condol, who raced down the sideline toward the QU fan contingent.

Plesha provided two goals and two assists in the game and he now has three goals on the season. Condol has three goals and one assist.

The Hawks finished with a 20-12 advantage in shots and a 12-4 edge in corner kicks. Junior keeper Nate Griffin (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) made four saves in the winning effort, while Helin made nine stops.

The Hawks will play another undefeated and ranked team on Friday (Sept. 30) when they take on No. 3 Rockhurst (7-0-1, 5-0-1 GLVC) in Kansas City.
