Miners' Late Goal Leads To 2-2 Tie at Legends Stadium

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team scored the first two goals of Friday (Sept. 24) night's game against Missouri S&T and looked like it was going to hold on in the second half, but the Miners equalized in the 89th minute, leading to a 2-2 draw at Legends Stadium.

The Hawks (3-2-2, 1-2-2 GLVC) got on the board in the fourth minute as senior midfielder Taylor Reis (Quincy, Ill./Quincy Notre Dame) redirected a cross by junior forward David Geerling (St. Louis, Mo./CBC/SLU) into the back of the net to give QU a 1-0 lead. It was Reis' team-leading fourth goal of the year while Geerling was credited with his second assist.

Quincy added on in the 16th minute as Reis sent in a cross for junior forward Artan Emini (Yorkville, Ill.), who backheeled the ball past S&T keeper Aaron Hohenstein for his first goal of the season. Reis picked up his first assist.

Just over two minutes later, the Miners (2-0-4, 1-0-3 GLVC) cut the Hawks' lead in half as Felipe Andrade scored off a deflection. Unnar Ulfarsson was given the assist.

The Hawks had more of the possession in the first half, holding an 8-3 lead in shots. S&T won that battle in the second half, 6-5, and put the equalizer in the net in with 106 seconds left in regulation as Will McIntyre fired from outside the box into the left corner of goal.

Quincy had more chances in the overtime periods, leading in shots, 4-2, but could not find the winner. The Hawks had two glorious chances in the 108th minute, but shots by junior forward Jordan Stephens (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell) and Reis were denied at the line by Missouri S&T defenders as Hohenstein scrambled in the box.

The Hawks had a 17-11 lead in shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Hohenstein made six saves while junior goalkeeper Nate Griffin (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) made two stops.

The Hawks return to Legends Stadium Sunday (Sept. 25) at 2:30 p.m. to take on undefeated No. 16 Drury (7-0, 5-0 GLVC).
