Hawks Take First Loss To Southwest Baptist

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University football team saw its season-opening three-game winning streak snapped as Southwest Baptist stopped the Hawks, 37-20, on Saturday (Sept. 24) in QU's Homecoming game at QU Stadium.

Southwest Baptist (4-0, 2-0 GLVC) is the only remaining unbeaten team in the Great Lakes Valley Conference as both teams came in with unblemished 3-0 records.

The QU running game, which had been so successful in the first three games, could not get on track against the Bearcats, who limited the Hawks to 72 yards on the ground and 2.2 yards per carry.

Meanwhile, SBU rolled up 280 rushing yards and out-gained Quincy, 388-230, for the game.

After the teams traded punts on their opening possessions, the Bearcats marched 60 yards on 13 plays, capping the drive with a six-yard touchdown pass from TJ Edwards to Scottie Wilson that gave the visitors a 7-0 lead.

The Hawks trailed 14-0 after one quarter, but got on the board with 12:50 remaining in the first half as redshirt-sophomore quarterback Robbie Kelley (Rochester, Ill.) connected with senior wide receiver De'Carlos Poole (Springfield, Ill.) on a seven-yard pass in the back of the end zone. The touchdown capped a 10-play, 56-yard drive and cut SBU's lead to 14-6.

The Bearcats made it 21-7 with 4:53 left in the second quarter as Edwards found Kendrick Payne, who made an acrobatic catch in the end zone on a seven-yard touchdown pass.

True freshman backup quarterback Andrew Rund (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Priory) checked into the game on the Hawks' next possession as Kelley nursed an injury. Rund drove the Hawks into the red zone, but Maurice Downey intercepted a pass on 4th-and-2 to stop the drive and send the game to halftime at 21-6.

The Hawks went 15 plays on their opening drive of the second half with Rund at quarterback, but with the drive stalled at the SBU 21-yard line, the Hawks had a 38-yard field goal blocked.

Seven plays later, Edwards had his third passing touchdown, finding Nehemiah Gross on a 13-yard strike.

Senior wide receiver Eric Poindexter (Newport News, Va./Warwick/Monroe College) returned the ensuing kickoff 60 yards to the SBU 34-yard line. Kelley would replace Rund on a 3rd-and-6 play at the SBU 13-yard line and immediately connected with Poindexter in the end zone to cut Southwest Baptist's lead to 27-13.

The Bearcats' Jordan LeClair added a 37-yard field goal to push their lead to 30-13 early in the fourth quarter.

Rund and Kelley, still hobbled from his earlier injury, shared the snaps on the next possession, marching 65 yards on 17 plays with Rund finding junior tight end Owen Schoenenberger (Evansville, Wis.) on a four-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 30-20.

That would be the last time the Hawks would find the end zone, though, as an onside kick was recovered by the Bearcats and they added a late touchdown.

Rund was the Hawks' leading rusher with 38 yards on 13 carries. Redshirt-freshman Dominique Bobo (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade/Valparaiso) made his QU debut, running for 25 yards on four carries. Redshirt-freshman Jaylan James (St. Louis, Mo./Miller Career Academy) was limited to three yards rushing after running for over 100 in his first three games.

Rund was 11-for-22 through the air with 90 yards and a touchdown. Kelley went 9-for-16 for 68 yards and two scores. Poindexter was the Hawks' leading receiver with six catches for 59 yards and one touchdown. Junior wideout Kody Wood (Jacksonville, Ill.) caught three balls for 47 yards.

Sophomore linebacker Cody Leonard (Carrollton, Ill.) led the defense with 11 tackles (seven solo), while redshirt-sophomore linebacker T.J. Daniels (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) added 10 stops (five solo). Defensive linemen Darian Johnson (Freeport, Ill.) and Antony Greenhow (Maywood, Ill./Proviso East/SIU Carbondale) each had a sack.

Edwards was responsible for all five of the Bearcats' touchdowns, throwing for three and rushing for two. Bubba Jenkins, the GLVC's leading rusher entering the game, finished with 123 yards on 24 carries. Cory Hanger had 78 yards on the ground while Edwards produced 57 yards from the quarterback position.

The Hawks will return to the field next Saturday (Oct. 1) when they travel to Saint Joseph's (2-2, 1-1 GLVC) for a noon kickoff. The Pumas lost to Missouri S&T, 54-21, on Saturday.
