Hawks Stumble at Saint Joseph's

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University football team was never able to gain traction on a sloppy field and rainy day at Alumni Stadium in Rensselaer, Ind. as the Hawks turned the ball over five times and Saint Joseph's pulled away for a 31-13 win on Saturday (Hawktober 1) afternoon.

The Pumas (3-2, 2-1 GLVC) outgained the Hawks (3-2, 1-2 GLVC), 411 to 355, but Quincy lost three fumbles and threw two interceptions in a game that was halted for 50 minutes by lightning in the second quarter.

After a punt by each team to start the game, Saint Joseph's recovered a fumble on a fumbled snap exchange by the Hawks in their own end of the field.

On the next play Phillip Kimble dropped back to pass, but senior defensive tackle Darian Johnson (Freeport, Ill.) stepped up and plucked the pass out of the air, returning it 21 yards for his first career touchdown.

The Pumas would take advantage of a mishandled punt snap on the Hawks' next possession, eventually kicking a 24-yard field goal to cut Quincy's lead to 7-3 later in the first quarter.

On QU's next play from scrimmage, redshirt-junior running back Chris Harris (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin) was caught from behind and fumbled the ball, giving it back to the Pumas, who would make it 10-7 on the first play of the second quarter on a three-yard rush by Martez Walker.

The QU defense would force a punt after another turnover by the offense, giving the ball back to Quincy at its own 20-yard line with 11:50 left in the first half.

The Hawks then put together their final scoring drive of the game, starting with a pair of runs by redshirt-freshman running back Dominique Bobo (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade/Valparaiso). The big strike on the drive was a 32-yard pass from redshirt-sophomore quarterback Robbie Kelley (Rochester, Ill.) to senior wide receiver Eric Poindexter (Newport News, Va./Warwick/Monroe College) that set up the Hawks in SJC territory.

After Bobo's nine-yard run, Kelley found senior wide receiver De'Carlos Poole (Springfield, Ill.) in the end zone on a 21-yard touchdown pass. Immediately after that, officials halted play on the field because of lightning in the area. Following a 50-minute delay, the Hawks missed the point-after and led 13-10.

It looked like the Hawks would take that lead into the intermission as SJC took over at its own 27-yard line and 31 seconds to work with. But a nine-yard run, 26-yard pass and a 38-yard touchdown pass from Kimble to Tremel Glasper as time expired gave the Pumas a 17-13 halftime lead.

The teams went scoreless in the third quarter with the Hawks coming away with a big goal line stand with 4:41 left in the quarter after a 10-play, 5-minute, 36-second drive by the hosts as redshirt-junior linebacker Nate Rueckemann (McHenry, Ill.) stopped Walker for a three-yard loss on fourth-and-goal at the 1-yard line.

In the fourth quarter, the Hawks drove into Puma territory three times, but could not come away with points. They turned it over on downs twice and had an interception. Meanwhile, the Pumas scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to put the game away.

Kelley went 12-for-31 with 228 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions through the air. He was also sacked twice. Poindexter was his leading target with four catches for 126 yards. Poole caught three balls for 55 yards and a score.

Redshirt-freshman Jaylan James (St. Louis, Mo./Miller Career Academy) rushed for 67 yards on 15 carries while Harris and Bobo had 59 and 40 rushing yards, respectively.

Redshirt-senior cornerback Jasus Harkins (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) and Rueckemann led the Hawks with nine tackles apiece. Johnson finished with five tackles (four solo), three tackles for loss, one sack and an interception returned for a touchdown.

The Hawks had trouble stopping the Pumas' running game, which gained 273 yards. Walker had 187 yards and two touchdowns. Kimble was 10-for-18 for 138 yards and a touchdown through the air.

The Hawks will now look to regroup for next Saturday's (Hawktober 8) matchup at William Jewell. Kickoff in Liberty, Mo. is set for 1 p.m.
