Hawks Grab Season's First Win at Washburn Invitational

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's volleyball team opened the 2016 campaign with a Friday split in the first day of the Washburn Invitational in Topeka, Kan.

Host Washburn, ranked No. 16 in the nation, won in straight sets, in the opener, 25-12, 25-18, 25-14, but the Hawks bounced back with a four-set triumph over Pittsburg State, 25-16, 25-20, 21-25, 25-21.

The Hawks will play two more matches on Saturday (Sept. 3) at the event before returning home. Quincy will play host to the first-ever QU Volleyball Tournament on Sept. 9-10.

Quincy def. Pittsburg State – 25-16, 25-20, 21-25, 25-21

The Hawks were strong both offensively and defensively in routing the Gorillas in the first two sets of Friday's nightcap. Quincy limited Pitt State to a minus-.111 hitting percentage in the first set as the Hawks had three of their six blocks in the frame.

In the second set, the Hawks hit .250, getting five kills from junior Bobbie Eastman (Fenton, Mich.) in the stanza.

The Gorillas forced a fourth set with a 25-21 win in Set 3, but the Hawks were unfazed, hitting .318 (17 kills, three errors) to close out the match in four.

The Hawks racked up 10 service aces in the match, their most since the posted the same output against Illinois Springfield on Sept. 18 last season. Junior libero Rachel Shores (Huntley, Ill.) led QU with five aces.

Quincy got tremendous production from its pin hitters, including 15 kills from junior Bekah Raebel (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union), 12 from sophomore Taylor McMonagle (Green Bay, Wis./Denmark) and 10 from Eastman. McMonagle made it a double-double, adding a match-high 17 digs. Shores picked out 13 attacks on the back row.

Freshman setter Sara Rathbun (Stanford, Ill./Olympia) dealt 45 assists in helping the Hawks hit .200 for the match. Eastman and senior middle Emily Lindemulder (Homer Glen, Ill./Chicago Christian) led Quincy at the net with four blocks each.

No. 16 Washburn def. Quincy – 25-12, 25-18, 25-14

The Hawks were unable to start their season with a win on Friday as they ran into one of the top teams in the country. The Ichabods were an NCAA Tournament team last season, going 28-6, and they look to make noise once again in the Central region.

Washburn hit .315 in the match, while holding the Hawks to a .000 mark. Quincy, one of the top blocking teams in the country last year, were only able stop two WU swings at the net in the match.

Raebel led the Hawks with seven kills while McMonagle and Lindemulder added five each. Rathbun dished out 20 assists and Shores led the back row with a match-high 10 digs.
