Hawks Win Twice, Finish Opening Weekend 3-1

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's volleyball team won both its matches to finish its trip at the Washburn Invitational with a 3-1 record.

The Hawks bounced back from a first-set loss against Missouri Western to top the Griffons in four sets, 16-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-22, in the morning. Later in the day, the Hawks put together their most complete performance of the weekend, sweeping Emporia State, 25-18, 25-19, 25-20.

Quincy def. Missouri Western – 16-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-22

The Hawks struggled in the early-going against the Griffons, hitting .062 in the opening frame while allowing MWSU to swing at a .406 clip.

The Griffons looked on the verge of taking command of the match, bursting to leads of 9-1 and 14-7 in Set 2. The Hawks rallied, though, and surged ahead, 21-19. MWSU killed off one Quincy set point, but a double block by junior Jessica Licurgo (Goodyear, Ariz./Sandra Day O'Connor) and senior Emily Lindemulder (Homer Glen, Ill./Chicago Christian) evened the match at one set apiece.

"Our block did its job all weekend," said head coach Bob Crank. "We got a little ahead of ourselves this morning (in dropping the first set). I backed off from coaching and wanted them to take control and ownership of themselves. Our bench had energy and kept everyone engaged on the floor."

In the third set, sophomore Taylor McMonagle (Green Bay, Wis./Denmark), Lindemulder and Licurgo took control offensively. The trio combined for 16 kills while junior Miranda Rodriguez (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) dished out 14 assists.

"Miranda came in and was really good," said Crank. "She ran a high tempo, diverse offense that opened up different opportunities for different attackers."

Quincy closed out the match in Set 4, turning an 18-16 deficit into a 20-18 lead and never trailing after that point. Lindemulder put the game away with a kill.

McMonagle led the Hawks with 17 kills (.275) and three aces, while Lindemulder tacked on 14 kills while hitting .462. Licurgo was dominant at the net with six blocks and junior libero Rachel Shores (Huntley, Ill.) led the back row with 13 digs.

Quincy def. Emporia State – 25-18, 25-19, 25-20

The Hawks were dominant in their sweep of Emporia State in their final match of the weekend, out-hitting the Hornets, .256 to .173. Quincy also led on service aces, 8-1, and kills, 46-32.

"We had a few hiccups here and there, but we identified the errors we needed to correct and put it all together," Crank said. "We need to continue to apply our principles in practice and we'll be ready to host our tournament next weekend."

McMonagle had another outstanding match, posting a double-double with 15 kills (.293) and 10 digs. Lindemulder totaled 10 kills and a match-high five blocks.

Rodriguez handed out 34 assists and led the team with three aces. Shores tacked on 12 digs.

The Hawks will now head home for four matches next weekend in the QU Women's Volleyball Tournament. Quincy will play Missouri Baptist (2 p.m.) and Columbus State (7 p.m.) on Friday and Cedarville (11:30 a.m.) and Maryville (7 p.m.) on Saturday at Pepsi Arena.
