Hawks Go Five Sets, Edge Prairie Stars on Saturday

QUINCY, Ill. – For the second consecutive season, the Quincy University women's volleyball team went the distance with Illinois Springfield and came away with a 3-2 win over the Prairie Stars. The final scores of Saturday's (Sept. 17) match in Springfield were 25-21, 22-25, 14-25, 25-18, 15-10.
 
The win evens the Hawks' record at 5-5 overall and 1-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. The Prairie Stars are also 5-5, 0-2 in GLVC competition.
 
Statistically, the teams played a nearly even match the whole way. UIS led in hitting percentage, .186 to .180 and kills, 60-56. The Hawks led in aces, 5-3, and blocks, 7-5. Both teams scored 68 points.
 
The Hawks got four kills from sophomore Taylor McMonagle (Green Bay, Wis./Denmark) in the opening set, taking it 25-21. A kill by junior Bobbie Eastman (Fenton, Mich.) sealed the win as Quincy totaled five blocks in the first set alone.
 
The Prairie Stars responded in the second and third sets to take a 2-1 lead going into Set 4. The Hawks limited the Stars to a .049 hitting percentage in the fourth set. QU took a quick 3-0 lead in the fourth frame with junior setter Miranda Rodriguez (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) on the serve.
 
UIS eventually evened the set at 6-6. The game remained close until the Hawks closed the set on an 8-2 run. An attacking error by the Prairie Stars gave the Hawks a win.
 
In the fifth, the Hawks fell behind 2-0 and 3-1 before rallying to take a 4-3 lead with junior libero Rachel Shores (Huntley, Ill.) serving. QU then went on a 4-0 run with McMonagle on the serve that broke a 5-5 tie and gave the visitor a 9-5 lead.

The Hawks gave themselves set point at 14-10 and Rodriguez's setter kill secured the win.
 
Senior Emily Lindemulder (Homer Glen, Ill./Chicago Christian) led the Hawks with 11 kills (.579) while McMonagle and junior Bekah Raebel (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) added 10 kills apiece. Sophomore Stephanie Mizeur (Riverton, Ill.) tacked on eight kills.
 
McMonagle had a double-double with 17 digs while Shores led the back row with 25 digs. Senior Jessica Wicinski (Geneva, Ill.) had 15 digs. Rodriguez served up 34 assists and freshman Sara Rathbun (Stanford, Ill./Olympia) added 13.
 
Alyssa Hasler had a match-high 19 kills to lead the Prairie Stars.
 
The Hawks will have a quick turnaround as they return to Pepsi Arena on Tuesday (Sept. 20) night at 7 p.m. for a nonconference match against Lindenwood.
