Quincy Shines Under the Lights in Friday Sweep of Rockhurst

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 QUINCY, Ill. - The No. 10 Quincy University baseball team completed a Friday night sweep over Rockhurst University to start a Great Lakes Valley Conference weekend series that pits the two teams tied atop the GLVC West Division. QU started the night with a come from behind win that went 13 innings. Brandon Ley tossed a complete game shutout to earn a 5-0 win in game two.

Rockhurst (23-20, 14-8 GLVC) held a 6-1 lead after gathering four runs in the top of the eighth inning in game one.

David Hayes led off the bottom of the eighth for Quincy (32-10, 16-6 GLVC) with a double down the right field line. Chris Ward followed with a single through the right side to move Hayes to third. Brynn Martinez singled to left center to score Hayes.

After a double play on a line drive to left, Thomas Cargile entered the game on the mound for RU. Cargile sent a failed pickoff attempt down the right field line to advance Martinez to third. Martinez would score on a passed ball.

After David Jacob walked, Jake Walters hammered a two-run home run over the left field wall to pull Quincy within one run. The home run was QU's 68th team home run tying the QU record set in 1999.

Ryan Snyder followed with a double to right center. Snyder would score on a Justin Blechle single to tie the game 6-6.

Teddy Rule (W, 3-0) tossed five innings of scoreless relief with seven strike outs. Rule and Mark Niebrugge combined for 15 strikeouts and just three walks. Rule held RU scoreless from the ninth to the 13th inning.

With one out, Troy Wehde hit a pinch hit single to left field. Wehde advanced to second base after a single to center field from Ward. Martinez singled to left field and Wehde came around to score the game-winning run lifting Quincy 7-6 in the 13 inning game.

Brandon Ley (W, 6-0) was lights out in game two for Quincy. Ley pitched a complete game shutout scattering nine hits over seven innings. The senior had four strike outs and no walks.

Quincy scored three runs in the first inning. David Jacob started the scoring with an RBI single to center to score Martinez. Matt Hilmes walked with the bases loaded to score Jacob. Justin Blechle hit a sacrifice fly to score Walters to cap the first inning scoring.

Dominic Miles and David Jacob hit back to back RBI singles up the middle in the sixth inning to provide two insurance runs for Ley.

Quincy and Rockhurst will play the final doubleheader of the GLVC weekend series at 1 p.m. tomorrow, Apr. 30 at QU Stadium. Senior Day will take place prior to first pitch.
