Ledbetter, Greene Lead Offense, but Hawks Fall at #6 UMSL

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team dropped a pair of games on the road to No. 6 Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday (April 2) afternoon by scores of 6-1 and 9-6.

The Hawks (12-16, 7-9 GLVC) hit three home runs on the afternoon against one of the nation's top pitchers, Hannah Perryman, but could not keep up with the UMSL offense.

Quincy opened the scoring of Game 1 in the second inning as sophomore Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.) slugged a two-out solo home run to right field to give the Hawks an early 1-0 lead. It was her first home run of the season.

QU freshman starter Kasey Bradley (Waterloo, Ill.) kept the Tritons (36-3, 14-2 GLVC) in check in the first two innings before the home team took a 2-1 lead in the third on a two-run homer by Erin Walker.

Serena Olson's two-run single in the fourth made it 4-1 before Sara Kern lifted a two-run homer in the sixth to cap the scoring.

The Hawks had leadoff hits in the fourth and the seventh, but Perryman was able to strand both runners. She earned the win, striking out 11 batters with no walks.

Bradley (2-3) took the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts in a complete game effort.

In Game 2, the Tritons jumped on the scoreboard for seven runs in the first two innings.

The QU offense battled the rest of the way. Senior Samantha Ledbetter (Tuscola, Ill./Olney Central) smacked a two-run homer to center field to cut the lead to 7-2 in the third. It was Ledbetter's fifth home run of the season.

The Hawks made it 7-4 in the fifth inning when Ledbetter singled with two outs before junior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) homered to center field. Greene now has a team-leading eight home runs.

UMSL got back single runs in the fifth and sixth innings before another QU rally in the seventh. Sophomore Karli McLaughlin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) stroked a leadoff double and pinch-runner Dana Walsh (Wonder Lake, Ill./McHenry) scored on Ledbetter's RBI single. Greene followed with a run-scoring single that brought in senior Rebecca Powers (Manchester, Mo./Kennedy Catholic), who singled earlier in the inning.

The Hawks had two runners on with one out, trailing 9-6, but had a runner picked off before a strikeout ended the game.

Perryman (31-1) picked up the win, allowing six runs on 12 hits. She struck out six and walked one in the complete game. She is now just 15 away from breaking the NCAA Division II record for career strikeouts, which is currently held by Quincy's Torie Bunzell (2008-11) at 1,539.

Junior starter Tiffany Harbison (Waterloo, Ill.) suffered the loss (3-4), allowing seven runs (six earned) in 1 1/3 innings pitched. She gave way to sophomore Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg), who tossed 4 2/3 innings of relief, allowing two runs on two hits.

Ledbetter and Greene led the offense, each finishing with three hits in the game and four on the day. Both also had three RBI in Game 2.

The Hawks return to the field on Sunday (April 3) to take on Maryville at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo. First pitch is set for noon.
