Jacob Leads Hawks To Sunday Sweep, Series Win

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team was determined not to split its third straight Great Lakes Valley Conference weekend series and scored 10 unanswered runs in a doubleheader opener on Sunday (April 10) to sweep Missouri-St. Louis in Missouri. The Hawks won three of four from the Tritons on the weekend.

The Hawks (21-8, 7-5 GLVC) are now among a jumble of four teams atop the GLVC West standings. No GLVC team has a record better than 8-4.

In Sunday's opener, the Hawks opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as Dominic Miles singled, stole second, went to third on an error and scored on a two-out RBI single by Ryan Snyder.

Things came unraveled a bit for the Hawks in the bottom of the inning as the Tritons (20-10, 5-7 GLVC) scored six runs – three earned – off starter Cole Crawford, who was not able to get out of the inning. Graham Spraker, making his first relief appearance of the season, escaped the inning after allowing one inherited runner to score.

It was Spraker's performance that gave Quincy's bats the chance to get back in the game. The junior turned in his best outing of the season, tossing 5 1/3 innings of shutout relief. He scattered five hits and struck out four with no walks.

The Hawks still trailed 6-1 entering the fourth when Justin Blechle drew a walk and eventually scored on Miles' RBI single. QU left the bases loaded to end the inning.

The Hawks cut the deficit to 6-5 in the fifth as Troy Wehde and Chandler Purcell each drew one-out walks. Blechle followed with a three-run bomb to right field – his seventh home run of the season.

David Jacob led off the sixth inning with his eighth home run of the season to tie the game at 6-6.

The Hawks put the game away in their final at bat, loading the bases for Jacob, who delivered a one-out, two-run single to give the Hawks an 8-6 lead. Snyder re-loaded the bases with a walk and Matt Hilmes poked a two-run single to stretch the lead to 10-6. Snyder's RBI groundout capped the scoring.

Closer Teddy Rule did not allow a ball to leave the infield in securing the win in the top of the seventh.

Miles was 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Jacob went 2-for-4 with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored. Snyder reached base four times, going 2-for-2 with a run, an RBI and two walks. Hilmes also had two hits and two RBI.

Spraker (4-1) earned the win for his relief outing, while Jon Shanker (1-1) was charged with the loss for UMSL.

In Game 2, the Hawks gave starter Jake Peterson the offensive support he needed early in the game. QU took a quick 1-0 lead as Brynn Martinez reached on an error and eventually scored on Jacob's RBI single to center.

UMSL starter Kevin Smith walked the bases loaded in the second inning before Nolan Snyder's deep fly ball brought home Blechle and moved the other two runners into scoring position. Martinez followed with an RBI groundout before Miles and Jacob smacked back-to-back doubles to give Quincy a 5-0 lead.

Wehde made it 7-0 in the third inning with a two-run homer, his second of the season.

Peterson kept the Tritons off the board for the first three innings before turning it over to Dalton Overstreet to start the fourth. UMSL tagged the freshman for three runs in the inning to cut Quincy's lead to 7-3. The Tritons stranded two runners in scoring position as Overstreet got a pop-up to end the inning.

The Hawks made it 8-3 in the fifth on Purcell's RBI groundout.

Braden Shull retired the Tritons in order in the fifth, but Justin Busekrus cut it to 8-4 in the bottom of the sixth on his own RBI groundout.

Jacob provided the final run of the game as he led off the eighth with his eighth home run of the season. He finished the day 7-for-9 with two home runs, six RBI and three runs scored. He was 5-for-5 in Game 2.

Karl Hirsch pitched around trouble in the eighth to keep the Tritons off the board. The game was called at that point due to darkness. The start of the doubleheader was delayed from its scheduled 11:30 a.m. start as rain showers passed through the St. Louis area.

Shull (4-1) earned the win with his two relief innings, allowing one run on one hit with one walk. He also struck out a batter.

Wehde reached base four times, going 2-for-2 with a double, a home run, two walks, two RBI and two runs scored. Blechle walked three times and scored three runs.

Smith (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season allowing eight runs (seven earned) on five hits. He walked six and struck out five.

The Hawks return to QU Stadium on Wednesday (April 12) for a nonconference game against Hannibal-LaGrange. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
