PLAY ON! Hawks Rally For OT Win Over Drury, 107-99

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The No. 7-seed Quincy University men's basketball team has played in close games throughout the second half of this season, and the Hawks used that late-game moxie to pull out a 107-99 overtime win over No. 2-seed Drury in the GLVC Tournament quarterfinal at Family Arena.

The Hawks (20-9) advanced to the semifinal of the conference tournament for the first time since 2008. Quincy will play the winner of No. 3-seed UW-Parkside and No. 6-seed Truman at 8:30 p.m.

The win also snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Panthers and gave the Hawks their first 20-win season since 2009-10.

Quincy is also the highest seed to advance to the semifinals since Lewis was a No. 4W (7/8) seed in the 2008 tournament. Prior to that, No. 7 UWP advanced to the semifinal in 2002.

On Friday, neither team garnered more than an eight-point lead in the game, which featured seven tie scores and 17 lead changes.

Quincy had its largest lead of the game, 90-82, with 2:56 to play in regulation before the Panthers got it down to 90-87 with 2:30 left. A layup by junior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Bayside, Wis./Waunakee/Kirkwood CC) off an entry pass by junior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) pushed the lead to 92-87.

Kameron Bundy then buried a 3-pointer and QU went cold from the field in the last two minutes as Douglas Moore's free throws with 58 seconds tied the game at 92-92. The Hawks had a chance to win at the buzzer, but a 3-pointer came up short to send the game to overtime.

After a Tagarelli steal, senior guard Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) drained a transition 3-pointer to open the overtime scoring – his sixth 3-pointer of the game.

The Hawks never relinquished the lead after that point. Tagarelli made two straight buckets to keep the lead at 100-97 with 1:31 left. Junior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) pulled down a Bundy miss on the next possession, then sank two free throws.

After Tevin Foster hit a pair at the line, Senor was fouled and knocked down his free throws with 34 seconds left. The Hawks then got a defensive stop and Washington split a pair to push the lead to 107-99. Foster's missed 3-pointer sealed the win for Quincy.

The Hawks took a 50-44 lead into halftime after shooting 8-for-16 from 3-point range in the first half. Des Jardins hit four of his career-high six 3-pointers in the first half. He finished with a career-best 21 points.

The Panthers (19-8) opened the half on a 13-2 run to take a 57-52 lead after consecutive 3-pointers – the latter by Foster, who scored 25 points and made five 3-pointers.

The Hawks chipped away at that lead and Washington's layup on a 2-on-1 fastbreak gave QU a 62-61 lead.

The teams then traded the lead six times down the stretch before the overtime period.

Des Jardins led six Hawks in double figures with 21 points on 6-for-8 shooting from 3-point range. Tagarelli added 20 points on 9-for-15 shooting. Junior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Senior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Maine West/Illinois Central) scored 19 points on 8-for-13 shooting and hit three triples. He also ripped away three steals. Washington scored 14 points and sophomore guard/forward Bobby Frasco (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect/Buffalo) hit four crucial 3-pointers for 12 points.

The Hawks dished out 29 assists to just 11 turnovers in the game, led by a career highs by Senor (11), McGaughey (seven) and Tagarelli (six).

The Panthers out-shot Quincy, 53.3 percent to 52.1 percent, from the field. Bundy finished with a career-high 34 points for the Panthers on 9-of-22 shooting.
