Hawks Blank S&T, 8-0, in Twinbill Finale

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team pounded three home runs in Game 2 in Saturday (March 26) afternoon's doubleheader to earn a split with visiting Missouri S&T at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex.

The Hawks dropped the opener, 2-0, but blanked the Miners, 8-0, in the nightcap behind a complete game effort from sophomore Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.) and a powerful offensive showing.

Quincy (11-13, 6-6 GLVC) has now split four of its six conference doubleheaders, including both this weekend.

Senior Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./Collinsville/UT-Martin) picked out a 1-1 pitch with two outs in the first inning of Game 2 and powered it to the opposite field for a two-run homer. It was her second home run of the season and gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

Quirk pitched around a one-out single in the second and retired the side in order in the third to keep the game at 2-0. In the bottom half, senior Samantha Ledbetter (Tuscola, Ill./Olney Central) smacked a one-out solo home run to straightaway centerfield to make it 3-0. Scrum then reached on an error with two outs before scoring on Quirk's double down the left field line.

Junior Kaylee Jones (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine CC) singled to start the fourth and went to second on a single by senior Rebecca Powers (Manchester, Mo./Kennedy Catholic). Freshman Jackie Farbak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way) followed with an RBI single to give QU a 5-0 lead. Two batters later, junior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) smoked a three-run shot to left-center to push the lead to eight.

Quirk, who set down eight in a row entering the fifth, allowed two runners to reach in the top of the inning on a single and an error, but induced a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.

Quirk (2-4) struck out four batters and did not allow a walk in five innings of work. She allowed just three hits in the complete game shutout. Ashley Rausch (1-1) took the loss for the Miners (10-21, 2-10 GLVC).

The Hawks had nine hits in the game – one by each starter in the lineup.

In Game 1, the Hawks were not able to get anything going offensively against S&T starter Kati Viets.

The Miners scored both of their runs in the first inning on back-to-back RBI hits by Savannah Fedorchak and Cailey Baker.

After that, QU freshman left-hander Kasey Bradley (Waterloo, Ill.) settled in. She allowed just five hits after the first inning.

Greene provided the only two hits for the Hawks until the seventh when they put two on with two outs, but a groundout ended the game.

Bradley (2-2) took the loss, though she pitched well, allowing two runs on seven hits. She walked two and struck out four. Viets (5-10) tossed a complete game shutout, scattering four singles and striking out three with no walks.

The Hawks finish their six-game homestand on Tuesday (March 29) at 2 p.m. when they take on Truman (19-7, 11-1 GLVC), which has won eight in a row.
