Hawks Pound 15 Hits To Earn Split With Rival Truman

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team held off Truman State, 7-5, in the nightcap of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Tuesday (March 29) afternoon at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex to earn a split with the Bulldogs. Truman won Game 1, 10-1.

The Hawks (12-14, 7-7 GLVC) – who handed the Bulldogs just their second GLVC loss – have now split their last four conference doubleheaders, winning the second game in each of the last three. Quincy is nearing the midway point of the 30-game GLVC schedule and sits in a tie for seventh in the league standings. The top eight teams advance to the GLVC Tournament.

In Tuesday's second game, the Hawks out-hit the Bulldogs (20-8, 12-2 GLVC), 15-5 and scored in five of their six innings.

The game started with a scoreless first inning before senior Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./Collinsville/UT-Martin) slugged a solo home run in the bottom of the second to give QU a 1-0 advantage. The Hawks would load the bases later in the inning, but left all three runners stranded off TSU starter Lauren Dale.

The Bulldogs answered with two runs in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead on a two-run single by Lex Van Nostrand.

Scrum re-gained the lead for the Hawks with a two-run double that plated senior Samantha Ledbetter (Tuscola, Ill./Olney Central) and junior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.), who each singled to start the inning.

Junior Kaylee Jones (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine CC) used her wheels in the fourth inning to generate a run. She beat out a bunt single, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by freshman Jackie Farbak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way).

Sophomore Abby Burton (Springfield, Ill./Glenwood) and Scrum hit back-to-back home runs to lead off the fifth inning and give the Hawks a 6-2 advantage. Burton now has three homers on the season, while Scrum now has four.

Meanwhile, QU freshman starter Kristen Skala (Westmont, Ill.) was in a groove, retiring eight batters in a row with one out in the sixth. Another walk with two outs put a pair of runners on, but Skala got Whitney Richardson to ground out to get out of the inning.

Greene and Ledbetter each reached on one-out singles in the bottom of the sixth to put two runners on. Scrum followed with a single up the middle that was bobbled by the center fielder, allowing Greene to cross the plate.

Things got dicey for the Hawks in the top of the seventh as Brooke VunCannon started the inning with a solo homer. Sophomore Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.) took over for Skala at that point, but a double and three walks cut QU's lead to 7-4 with no outs and the bases loaded.

Quirk struck out cleanup hitter Cate Simon for the first out. She then induced a ground ball, but an error allowed all the runners to advance safely and make it 7-5. She followed that up by getting Morgan McMahan to ground into a game-ending double play as Greene scooped up the grounder at shortstop, stepped on the bag and fired to first to seal it.

Skala (5-4) earned the win, allowing three runs in six-plus innings. She walked three and struck out three. Dale (4-1) took the loss, surrendering three runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings.

Scrum paced the offense, going 4-for-4 with a double, two home runs and four RBI. It was QU's first two-homer game since Scrum hit two against Saint Joseph's on April 18, 2014. Greene was 3-for-4 with two runs. Jones, Ledbetter and sophomore Karli McLaughlin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) had two hits each.

In Game 1, the Bulldogs got on the board first on a two-run double by VunCannon in the second inning.

The Hawks cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning as Burton roped at triple down the right field line and scored on a perfectly-executed suicide squeeze bunt by Jones.

QU junior starter Tiffany Harbison (Waterloo, Ill.) kept the score at 2-1 until the fifth when Simon homered to bring the lead back to two for Truman. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the sixth and five in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Harbison (3-3) allowed five runs (three earned) on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings. She struck out three and walked two. Kindra Henze (5-5) allowed one run on seven hits in a complete game effort.

Ledbetter led the offense by going 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. Burton was 2-for-3 and scored QU's lone run.

The Hawks return to the field on Saturday (April 2) when they travel to take on Missouri-St. Louis (34-3, 12-2 GLVC) at noon.
