Farbak's Four RBI Help Hawks Garner Split With Drury

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team picked up a 6-3 win in second game of a doubleheader against Drury to earn a split in GLVC action on Friday (March 25) afternoon at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex. The Hawks dropped the opener to the Panthers, 3-0.

In Game 2, Drury (9-19, 3-7 GLVC) got on the board first on a Rachael Michaelis two-out RBI single in the second inning.

The Hawks (10-12, 5-5 GLVC) scored for the first time on the day in the bottom of the third as senior Rebecca Powers (Manchester, Mo./Kennedy Catholic) drew a leadoff walk and freshman Jackie Farbak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way) powered a two-run home run to give QU a 2-1 lead. It was Farbak's first career homer.

Meanwhile, QU freshman starter Kristen Skala (Westmont, Ill.) scattered nine hits, but limited the Drury damage to just three runs in a complete game effort.

Quincy made it a 6-1 game with four runs in the fourth inning. Sophomore Abby Burton (Springfield, Ill./Glenwood) rapped a one-out double and scored when sophomore Karli McLaughlin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) reached on an error. After junior Kaylee Jones (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine CC) singled, Farbak delivered a two-out, two-run double to make it 5-1. Senior Samantha Ledbetter (Tuscola, Ill./Olney Central) capped the inning with an RBI single that plated Farbak.

The Panthers scored single runs in the fifth and seventh innings to make it 6-3. Skala induced a groundout to end the game and leave the bags loaded for Drury.

Skala (4-4) picked up her team-leading fourth win of the season, allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits. She walked three and struck out three. Jessica Kjeldgaard (2-9) took the loss for the Panthers.

Farbak led the offense, going 2-for-4 with a double, a homer, two runs and four RBI. Ledbetter, McLaughlin and sophomore Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.) also had two hits each as QU out-hit DU, 10-9.

Game 1 started as a pitcher's duel as junior Tiffany Harbison (Waterloo, Ill.) squared off against Shelby Weissenbach.

The duo matched zeros on the board until the fifth inning when Kari Hillenburg's bloop double scored Alyssa Sargent, who led off with a single. The Panthers added two more on a home run by Grace Hargadon in the sixth inning that provided the winning margin.

The Hawks managed just four hits in the game – two off Weissenbach and two off Kjeldgaard. Weissenbach (6-10) earned the win with five shutout innings. Kjeldgaard nabbed her second save. The Hawks stranded all eight of their base-runners.

Harbison (3-2) gave up three runs (two earned) on eight hits in a complete game. She struck out eight and did not walk a batter.

The Hawks will return to the Mart Heinen Softball Complex on Saturday (March 26) to take on Missouri S&T. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
