Hawks Hand NAIA #1 Missouri Baptist First Loss

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team welcomed the top-ranked NAIA team to Pepsi Arena on Wednesday (March 23) and came away with a pair of wins.

The Hawks dispatched Missouri Baptist in the opener, 25-20, 25-20, 25-13, as QU played its second squad against the Spartans' JV team. In the finale, the two top teams faced off and the Hawks avenged an earlier loss to the previously-unbeaten Spartans, 25-17, 25-23, 19-25, 25-18, to deal the visitors their first defeat of the season. (Only the second match counted against the record for MBU, while both tack onto Quincy's overall mark).

Quincy improved to 17-19 on the season, heading into its final four matches – all Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association contests.

MATCH 2: Quincy def. NAIA #1 Missouri Baptist – 25-17, 25-23, 19-25, 25-18

The Hawks played one of their best all-around matches of the season as they hit .347 in the match and swatted eight service aces.

Senior Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) fueled a 3-0 service run in Set 1 that gave the Hawks a 7-4 lead. He finished the run with one of his four service aces.

The set was tied six times, the last at 10-10 before senior Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) got on the serve and Lawson put down back-to-back kills on passes from sophomore libero Simon Bruckner (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X) to give Quincy a 14-10 lead. A kill by senior Chris Chappelle (Los Angeles, Calif./Westchester/San Diego City) ended the set.

Missouri Baptist (24-1) out-hit the Hawks .476 to .409 in Set 2, but the Hawks never trailed in the set. Quincy led by as many as five, 18-13, but the Spartans cut it to as little as one at 19-18. The teams then traded sideouts the rest of the way as Chappelle closed it out with another kill.

The Spartans slowed the Hawks in Set 3, holding QU to a .296 mark to extend the match to a fourth set.

The Hawks were dominant on serve-receive in the final game, recording sideouts on 17-of-18 (94 percent) of MBU's serves. Junior setter Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) kept going back to the hot hand, Lawson, who recorded six of his team-leading 17 kills in the final frame without committing an error.

Lawson hit .448 in the match and his 17 kills were one shy of a season-best. He is now just 14 kills shy of 1,000 for his career.

Chappelle added 10 kills (.348) and junior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) finished with nine kills (.533). Senior Ty Coutts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty/Johnson & Wales) finished with five kills (.500) with no errors on 10 swings. Fanfulik had a double-double with 36 assists and 10 digs. Sophomore libero Collin Merk (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) also had 10 digs.
