Hawks Earn Road Split With Lewis, Finish Weekend 3-1

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team held off Lewis, 5-4, in the opener of Sunday's (March 20) doubleheader in Romeoville, Ill. before falling in the nightcap, 5-1. The split concluded a 3-1 road trip for the Hawks.

The Hawks (9-11, 4-4 GLVC), who hit four home runs in Saturday's opener at UW-Parkside, hit two more solo home runs in Sunday's first game to take an early 2-0 lead.

Junior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) slugged her sixth home run of the season and fourth in the last seven games to give the Hawks a first-inning lead. Senior Samantha Ledbetter (Tuscola, Ill./Olney Central) tagged a pitch from Lewis starter Paige Fossey to lead off the second inning. It was her third homer of the season and second in as many days.

The Flyers (12-13, 2-6 GLVC) got an unearned run back in the second off Quincy starter Kasey Bradley (Waterloo, Ill.).

The lead remained 2-1 until the fifth when Quincy broke through for three runs. Junior Kaylee Jones (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine CC) rapped a two-run double before scoring on Green's two-out single.

Lewis cut the lead to 5-3 in the sixth on Jenna Cairo's two-run double. Bradley stranded a runner at third by forcing a groundout to end the inning.

The Flyers rallied in the seventh, putting runners on the corners with one out. A line out generated the second out before a wild pitch forced in a run to put a runner at second with two outs and the Hawks clinging to a 5-4 lead. Bradley then allowed a walk, but got Brittany Russell to ground out to end the game.

Bradley (2-1) earned the win, despite allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and seven walks. She struck out one. The Flyers stranded 11 runners and went 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

Greene reached base three times to lead the offense, going 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk, two RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Abby Burton (Springfield, Ill./Glenwood) also had two hits in the game.

In Game 2, the Hawks were not able to get their offense going against Lewis starter Dara Sanders.

The game was scoreless through three innings as QU starter Tiffany Harbison (Waterloo, Ill.) pitched around one-out singles in each of the first two innings. Carly Jaworski ended the shutout bid with a leadoff homer to start the fourth. The Flyers would later score two unearned runs after an error extended the inning and a passed ball generated another run.

The Flyers made it 4-0 in the fifth on Jaworski's second solo homer of the game.

Quincy loaded the bases with one out in the sixth, but was only able to score one run on Burton's sac fly.

Harbison (3-1) suffered her first loss of the season, going five innings and allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks. She struck out five. Sophomore Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.) worked a scoreless inning of relief.

Jones led the offense by going 2-for-3 and scoring the Hawks' only run.

Sanders (2-1) earned the win for the Flyers with a complete game, allowing just one run on five hits. She walked four and struck out six.

The Hawks return to the Mart Heinen Softball Complex on Friday (March 25) at noon when they take on Drury in GLVC action.
