Quincy Sweeps Host UW-Parkside in Saturday Twinbill

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team got a couple solid pitching performances and came up with some timely hits in a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep of UW-Parkside by identical 6-1 scores on Saturday (March 19) afternoon in Kenosha, Wis.

The Hawks (8-10, 3-3 GLVC) evened their record in conference play heading into Sunday's twinbill at Lewis.

First-year transfer Kaylee Jones (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine CC) kick-started the offense in Game 1 by hitting the first of four solo home runs in the game for the visitors. It was her second home run of the season. Senior Samantha Ledbetter (Tuscola, Ill./Olney Central) pounded her second homer of the season in the third inning to give QU a 2-0 lead.

Rachel Seefeldt's solo home run for the Rangers (3-19, 0-6 GLVC) in the bottom of the third inning cut the Hawks' lead in half.

That was the only major blemish on the pitching line for junior Tiffany Harbison (Waterloo, Ill.), who continued her impressive start to the season.

Harbison (3-0) allowed just two singles outside the home run and struck out nine for her third straight start. She now has a 0.44 ERA and has allowed just 11 hits in 33 innings pitched.

Sophomore Abby Burton (Springfield, Ill./Glenwood) tacked on QU's third home run of the game in the sixth inning to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead. In the seventh, freshman Jackie Farbak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way) singled, followed by a walk by Jones. Junior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) then slugged a three-run home run to put the game out of reach at 6-1.

The Hawks managed seven hits in the game, though no one had multiple hits as they got contributions from across the lineup.

In Game 2, every Quincy starter registered a hit as the Hawks banged out 14, compared to just four for the Rangers.

Freshman Kristen Skala (Westmont, Ill.) was in command from the outset, allowing just one run on four hits. She walked one and struck out four while improving her record to 3-4.

The Hawks loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning before senior Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./Collinsville/UT-Martin) moved everyone up a bag with an RBI single. Ledbetter followed that with a sacrifice fly to give Quincy a 2-0 lead.

Senior Rebecca Powers (Manchester, Mo./Kennedy Catholic) singled to start the second inning and scored on Jones' RBI double. The Hawks made it 4-0 in the third as Ledbetter led off with a double and scored on Powers' two-out single.

Quincy led 6-0 after the top of the fifth inning when freshman Dana Walsh (Wonder Lake, Ill./McHenry) delivered a two-run double with the bases loaded.

The Rangers scored their only run of the game off Skala in the fifth inning to trim the lead to 6-1.

Ledbetter and Jones reached base three times for Quincy, which struck out just twice in the game.

The Hawks will return to the field on Sunday (March 20) at noon when they take on Lewis in Romeoville, Ill.
