Hawks Earn Split Behind Harbison, Greene's Efforts

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team bounced back from a tough sweep on Friday to split with McKendree, winning 5-1 before dropping the nightcap, 6-1, on Saturday (March 12) afternoon at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex.

Junior Tiffany Harbison (Waterloo, Ill.) turned in yet another impressive outing in the circle, giving up just a solo home run in a complete game effort. It was the first earned run allowed by Harbison in 26 innings pitched this season.

The Lady Hawks (6-10, 1-3 GLVC) played from in front in Game 1. Junior Kaylee Jones (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine CC) reached on a bunt single and junior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) slugged a two-run homer – her second in as many games – to give QU an early lead.

Harbison did not allow a hit until a two-out double in the third, but got a strikeout to end the inning. Quincy made it 3-0 in the bottom half when freshman Jackie Farbak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way) singled and scored on Greene's line drive double into the left-center field gap.

In the fourth, senior Samantha Ledbetter (Tuscola, Ill./Olney Central) reached on an error and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Abby Burton (Springfield, Ill./Glenwood).

Erica Schuelke's solo home run in the top of the fifth cut Quincy's lead to 4-1, but Harbison retired the last eight batters in the game – five via strikeout. Harbison (2-0) finished with nine strikeouts and three walks. She allowed just three hits. Opponents are batting just .093 off her this season.

Quincy tacked on its final run in the sixth as Ledbetter led off with a single and scored on Burton's double over the right fielder's head.

Greene led the offense, going 3-for-3 with a double, home run and three RBI.

In Game 2, it was McKendree (7-13, 1-1 GLVC) that started with the lead. The Bearcats scored three runs in the first inning, including two on a home run by Hanna Branch.

The Lady Hawks took advantage of a defensive miscue to scratch out a run in the first inning. Jones singled before Greene grounded to shortstop, but the defender mishandled the ball, allowing the speedy Jones to go to third. She would score on an RBI single by senior Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./Collinsville/UT-Martin). QU still had two runners on, but stranded them against McKendree starter Holly Magre.

A two-run homer by Brooke Gajewski gave the Bearcats a 5-1 lead in the third inning against Quincy starter Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.).

Reliever Kasey Bradley (Waterloo, Ill.) settled down the McKendree lineup after that point, tossing three hitless innings.

The QU offense, though, could not get on track against Magre, who finished with nine strikeouts. The Lady Hawks out-hit the Bearcats, 7-5, but stranded eight runners in the game.

Quirk (1-4) allowed five runs on four hits in three innings. She walked one and struck out two. Bradley pitched four relief innings and allowed on unearned run on one hit. Magre (4-4) picked up the win, allowing seven hits.

Jones reached base three times, going 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Quirk was 2-for-3.

The Lady Hawks return to the field next Saturday (March 19) to take on UW-Parkside in Kenosha, Wis. First pitch in the doubleheader is scheduled for noon.
