Harbison Opens 2016 Season With No-Hitter

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team opened up the 2016 season in spectacular fashion as junior right-hander Tiffany Harbison (Waterloo, Ill.) tossed a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over Tiffin in Clermont, Fla. on Tuesday (March 1) afternoon.

It was the program's first no-hitter since Torie Bunzell tossed a no-no on April 27, 2011 against Missouri-St. Louis.

The win was also the first in the head coaching career of Carla Passini.

The Hawks were defeated in their second game of the day by Findlay, 6-0.

In the opener, the QU lineup gave Harbison all the cushion she would need in the first inning. Freshman Jackie Farbak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way) reached on a one-out single in her first-ever collegiate at-bat. Senior Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./Collinsville/UT-Martin) followed with a single before junior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) doubled home Farbak to give QU a 1-0 lead.

Harbison (1-0) picked up a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the inning. She pitched around an error with two striekouts in the second and struck out another two in the third. The right-hander added her sixth strikeout in the fourth inning.

Quincy tacked on a couple insurance runs in the fifth inning as Farbak drew a walk and Scrum powered the first QU home run of the season to push the Hawks' lead to 3-0. Scrum, Farbak and Greene combined for all four of Quincy's hits and three runs and three RBI.

Harbison kept rolling through the final three innings, ending the game with her ninth strikeout. It was her third career shutout and 11th career win.

In their second game of the day, the Hawks could not get their offense on track against the Oilers (4-4). Quincy had five hits and drew three walks, but stranded eight runners on the bases.

Findlay got on the board with an unearned run off QU starter Kasey Bradley (Waterloo, Ill.) in the first inning. UF added three more runs – two unearned – in the third inning. Quincy committed three errors in the game.

The Hawks (1-1) stranded two runners in each of the first two innings and were never able to dig out of the hole.

Bradley (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs (one earned) on three hits in 2 1/3 innings. Sophomore Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg) pitched the last 4 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on six hits with five strikeouts.

Farbak led Quincy with two hits. Senior Rebecca Powers (Manchester, Mo./Kennedy Catholic) and freshmen Dana Walsh (Wonder Lake, Ill./McHenry) and Kylie Powers (Oak Forest, Ill.) had QU's other three hits. Chelsea McManaway earned the shutout win for the Oilers.

Quincy will return to the field at The Spring Games on Wednesday (March 2) when they take on Eckerd (noon CT) and the University of Mary (2 p.m. CT) in Clermont, Fla.
