Quincy Drops Wednesday Games in Florida

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team dropped a pair of games at The Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. on Wednesday (March 2) afternoon.

Sophomore right-hander Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.) gave the Hawks a strong starting effort in their opener against Eckerd, but the lineup could not back her up, falling to the Tritons, 2-0. The University of Mary got the better of Quincy in its second game of the day with QU falling, 14-3.

Both starters were in a groove early in the first game as both teams were held hitless through three innings. Quirk retired the first 12 batters she faced until hitting the leadoff batter in the fifth. After an error put runners on the corners with two outs, Quirk struck out Amanda Weathers to end the threat.

Junior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) doubled in the fourth for Quincy, but Nikole Van Gennep got a couple of pop-outs to strand the runner.

Junior Kaylee Jones (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine CC) picked up a single with one out in the sixth, but senior Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./Collinsville/UT-Martin) grounded into a double play.

The Tritons finally got to Quirk in the sixth. Kaycie Duncan singled to load the bases after a walk and fielder's choice put the first two runners on. A grounder to Jones at second base allowed her to throw to the plate for the force and record the first out, but Van Gennep ripped a two-run single to give the Tritons the lead.

Van Gennep pitched around a leadoff walk to junior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) to preserve the shutout.

Quirk (0-1) was charged with the loss, despite allowing just two runs on two hits in seven innings. She walked one and struck out three. Van Gennep earned the win with her two-hit shutout and seven strikeouts.

Against Mary, the Hawks' pitching staff came under fire early as the Marauders (3-8) scored seven runs in the first two innings.

QU cut the deficit to 7-2 in the third as freshman Jackie Farbak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way) singled and Greene reached on a fielder's choice. Scrum followed with a two-run double into the gap in left-center. She now has driven in four of Quincy's six runs this season.

The Marauders got one run back in the fourth and put the game away with six runs in the fifth.

Quincy closed the scoring in the bottom of the fifth when Greene singled with one out, went to third on Scrum's second double of the game and scored when freshman Kylie Powers (Oak Forest, Ill.) reached on an error.

QU starter Kristen Skala (Westmont, Ill.) was tagged with the loss as she was charged with three earned runs in the first inning. MeLanie Rodriguez (2-3) earned the win, going four innings and allowing one earned run on three hits.

The Hawks return to the field on Thursday (March 3) when they take on Kentucky Wesleyan (2 p.m. CT) and Tiffin (4 p.m.). QU defeated Tiffin the season opener, 3-0, on the strength of Tiffany Harbison's (Waterloo, Ill.) no-hitter.
