Hawks Shoot Through Saint Joseph's, 84-61

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team bounced back from Thursday's defeat to Indianapolis with a resounding 84-61 win over Saint Joseph's in Rensselaer, Ind. on Saturday (Feb. 6) afternoon.

With Truman's loss to the Greyhounds Saturday and Drury's win over Bellarmine, the Hawks (15-7, 9-4 GLVC) are in a three-way tie atop the GLVC West standings. Up next for Quincy are showdowns with two of the GLVC East's best – Lewis on Thursday and No. 23 UW-Parkside on Saturday – at Pepsi Arena.

Each GLVC division winner will earn the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds in the conference tournament. The remaining seeds are portioned out based on conference winning percentage and the applicable tiebreakers. The top four seeds in the tournament receive byes into the tournament quarterfinals in St. Charles, Mo.

The Hawks' win on Saturday earned them their third straight road split against GLVC competition. Quincy has not lost consecutive games since dropping the first three contests of the regular season.

On Saturday, the Hawks trailed 8-7 in the game's early minutes before pulling away with a 19-5 run over a six-minute stretch in the middle of the first half. Junior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to cap the run and give the Hawks a 26-13 cushion.

From there, sophomore reserve guard Bobby Frasco (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect/Buffalo) took over with his own pair of treys to push the Hawks' lead to 32-17 with 6:38 left in the half.

A 6-0 run that featured threes from junior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) and senior guard Jordan Wilson (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) closed the first half with Quincy on top 47-27.

The Hawks buried 11 3-pointers in the first half and finished the game 15-for-30 (50 percent) from long range. They shot 50 percent (31-for-62) from the field as well.

Meanwhile, the Hawks' defense allowed the offense to flow freely. QU held Saint Joseph's to just 35.7 percent (20-for-56) shooting, including a 2-for-17 mark (11.8 percent) from 3-point distance.

The Hawks also clobbered the Pumas on the glass, 43-30.

In the second half, the Hawks stretched their lead to as many as 28 points to remove all doubt from the outcome.

The Hawks capped their scoring with a 3-pointer by senior guard Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods), which was followed by a signature alley-oop slam from Senor to senior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Maine West/Illinois Central).

Senor paced the Hawks with 20 points, going 5-for-8 from beyond the arc. He also dished out a game-high six assists. The Hawks had 24 assists on 31 made field goals.

Junior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Bayside, Wis./Waunakee/Kirkwood CC) finished with 18 points on 8-for-13 shooting with eight rebounds. Junior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) neared a double-double with 10 points and nine boards. Des Jardins was the fourth Hawk in double figures with 12 points on four threes.

Frasco added nine points, Wilson had six points and five assists and Eneogwe finished with seven boards and five assists.

The Hawks return to the floor on Thursday (Feb. 11) at 7:30 p.m. to take on Lewis (17-6, 9-4 GLVC) at Pepsi Arena. All fans are encouraged to wear white to WHITE OUT the Flyers.
