Defense Helps Hawks Push Home Winning Streak to 12

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's basketball team turned in one of its best defensive efforts of the season on Thursday (Feb. 11) night and came away with an 83-63 win over Lewis in GLVC action at Pepsi Arena.

The Hawks (16-7, 10-4 GLVC) - winners of 12 straight at Pepsi Arena - are in a two-way tie atop the GLVC standings with Drury (10-4 GLVC), which defeated Illinois Springfield on Thursday night. Truman (9-5) fell a game behind both teams with an overtime defeat to No. 17 UW-Parkside in Kirksville, Mo.

Quincy put in a tremendous defensive effort to disrupt the Lewis motion offense. Max Strus came into the game as the GLVC's leading scorer at 21.2 points per game, but the Hawks held him to 13 points on 4-for-10 shooting and five turnovers. Senior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Maine West/Illinois Central) spent a bulk of the time guarding him with others chipping in, including senior guard Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods).

The Hawks also forced 20 turnovers by the Flyers (17-7, 9-5 GLVC) and turned them into 17 points.

The teams traded blows in the early minutes, but the Hawks steadily built their advantage to eight points, 26-18, on a 3-pointer by junior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) with 10:45 left in the first half.

The Hawks took command of the game late in the first half by going on a 12-2 run in the final three-plus minutes before halftime. The run was sparked by consecutive dunks, first by junior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) and then an alley-oop slam by Eneogwe off a lob from junior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) that brought the large Pepsi Arena crowd to its feet.

Des Jardins followed with a 3-pointer and junior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Bayside, Wis./Waunakee/Kirkwood CC) scored the final four points for QU, the last bucket coming as time expired on 19-foot jumper.

The Hawks scored the first five points of the second half to continue their run and eventually worked their lead to as many as 26 points. The Flyers whittled the lead down 14 points, but never threatened in the second half as the Hawks held them to just 33 percent (10-for-30) shooting in the last 20 minutes. Quincy held Lewis to just 37 percent (20-for-54) shooting for the game.

The Hawks shot 46.2 percent (30-for-65) from the field and went 9-for-24 (37.5 percent) from the 3-point line. QU attempted 11 more shots than the Flyers. Quincy dished out 18 assists and committed just 10 turnovers.

Tagarelli led the Hawks with a game-high 19 points to go with nine rebounds. Des Jardins matched a career high with 18 points on 6-for-7 shooting. He was 4-for-5 from 3-point range.

McGaughey (11 points, nine rebounds, three blocks) and Washington (nine points, nine rebounds) nearly had double-doubles. Eneogwe was the fourth QU player in double figures with 11. Senor had five points and six assists.

The Hawks and Flyers were even on the glass, 38-38, and Quincy piled up 12 steals and six blocks.

The Hawks will look to extend their home winning streak to 13 on Saturday (Feb. 13) when they take on No. 17 UW-Parkside (19-3, 12-2 GLVC) at 3:15 p.m. The Rangers knocked off Truman, 102-96, in overtime Thursday night.
