#17 UWP Snaps Quincy's Home Winning Streak In Overtime

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team saw a tight game slip away as Andy Mazurczak's jumper with 0.2 seconds left gave No. 17 UW-Parkside a 108-107 overtime win over the Hawks at Pepsi Arena on Saturday (Feb. 13) afternoon.

The Hawks (16-8, 10-5 GLVC) had their 12-game home winning streak halted with the defeat. QU is now alone in second place in the GLVC West, one game behind Drury (11-4 GLVC) and one game ahead of Truman (9-6).

QU led 107-106 after Mazurczak hit a pair of free throws with 27 seconds left in overtime. The Hawks then inbounded the ball, but Parkside's trap forced a turnover. Kyle Flanagan tried to get a shot up 12 seconds later, but senior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Maine West/Illinois Central) came up with a massive weak side block, sending the ball soaring into the stands.

After the inbounds, Mazurczak let the clock run down before attacking Quincy's defense with a drive. He was shut down twice before pulling up for a 12-footer that dropped in over junior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) just before time expired.

The teams traded blows for much of the game, though the Hawks held the lead for the majority of the second half after taking a 43-42 lead into the break.

Quincy started the second half on an 18-5 run to take its largest lead of the game, 61-47, with 14:39 left. The Hawks still led by 10, 87-77, with 3:37 remaining after Eneogwe's 3-pointer.

The Rangers (20-3, 13-2 GLVC) scored the next six points, but QU rallied again and led 91-83 after junior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) hit a pair of free throws with 1:51 remaining.

That would be the last time the Hawks would hit both free throws in regulation as they split on their next four trips to the line, allowing the Rangers chances to stay in the game.

Senor missed two free throws with 33 seconds left and the Hawks leading 95-93. UWP's Kendale McCullum, who scored a game-high 30 points, drew a foul and sank two free throws with 26 seconds remaining to tie the game.

The Hawks took the last shot in regulation, but a deep 3-pointer from the right wing by senior guard Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) missed short to send the game to overtime.

The Rangers scored the first bucket in the overtime, but junior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) converted a layin to tie the game.

QU then got its second straight stop and the Hawks beat a zone by Parkside as Senor hit Eneogwe on a lob over the top to give the hosts a 99-97 lead.

After Mazurczak's layup with 2:48 remaining tied the game, the teams traded free throws until senior guard Jordan Wilson (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) hit a step-back elbow jumper to push QU ahead 107-104 with 44 seconds left.

That led to the game's final sequence as Quincy never got the ball back in the offensive end.

The two teams were incredibly even in most statistical categories. Both teams shot 49 percent from the line and each had even spoils on the glass, 49-49. UWP committed one less turnover, 13-12, and both teams had 12 assists.

The biggest difference came at the line as the Rangers shot 30-for-40 (75 percent) from the stripe while the Hawks were 22-for-29 (75.9 percent).

QU battled foul trouble all night, which inhibited their ability to play aggressive defense down the stretch. Three Hawks fouled out, including Des Jardins, Wilson and junior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Bayside, Wis./Waunakee/Kirkwood CC). Three others finished with four fouls.

Six Hawks scored in double figures, led by McGaughey's double-double of 22 points, 13 rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Washington scored 13 of his 20 points in the first half. Senor had 16 points, six assists and four rebounds. Enegowe had 14 points, eight boards, two blocks and two steals.

Parkside did a nice job of keeping the Hawks out of their preferred transition opportunities as the visitors held a 10-6 advantage in fastbreak points. UWP also led in points in the paint, 60-42.

Mazurczak finished with 26 points and combined with McCullum's 30 gave the Rangers 56 points from their starting backcourt. McCullum added seven rebounds, five assists and five steals.

The Hawks will look to bounce back on Thursday (Feb. 18) when they travel to Rockhurst (12-11, 7-8 GLVC) for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off in Kansas City.
