Quincy Handles Rockhurst Down the Stretch, 79-74

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team took its final lead of the game with just over two minutes to play and pulled out a 79-74 road win over Rockhurst in Kansas City, Mo. on Thursday (Feb. 18) night.

The game was tight throughout and featured nine tie scores and 10 lead changes. The Hawks trailed by one point when they got a defensive stop and junior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) threw down a slam off a feed by senior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Maine West/Illinois Central) with 2:19 remaining.

The Hawks (17-8, 11-5 GLVC) would not relinquish their lead after that point, despite trailing by as many as six points in the second half. Quincy still led by just one after getting two straight defensive stops and junior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) bagged a 3-pointer from the corner to give the Hawks a 76-72 lead with 35 seconds left.

Rockhurst had a three-point edge before Washington's triple knotted the game at 42-42 with 17:22 remaining. That was the start of a 12-0 run that spanned three minutes as Eneogwe hit a three and converted a layup in that stretch also. McGaughey tacked on four points in the run that gave QU a 51-42 lead.

Rockhurst would respond with its own 22-7 burst, capped by 10 straight points that gave the home team a 64-58 lead after Austin LeVan's flush with 7:11 remaining.

Junior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) tied the game at 69-69 with five minutes left on a 3-pointer off a feed from Eneogwe.

The teams then traded the lead a couple times before McGaughey's slam gave Quincy the lead for good.

Junior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Bayside, Wis./Waunakee/Kirkwood CC) added 14 points and eight rebounds, while McGaughey scored 10 points and had three steals.
