#18 Quincy Survives Overtime Scare at Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The 18th ranked Quincy University women's basketball team took a commanding lead in the first half at the University of Indianapolis, but UIndy took the lead in the second half and it took a Kara Gerbus 3-pointer with 15 seconds remaining and some solid defense to send the game to overtime 63-63. QU regrouped in the extra period and came away with a 73-72 win over the Greyhounds. The Lady Hawks forced 24 turnovers and nabbed 10 steals in the game with the extra possessions proving to be the deciding factor.

With the Lady Hawks (19-2, 10-2 GLVC) trailing 63-60 with 15 seconds left in the fourth, Maggie Cunningham found Kara Gerbus open on the left wing to tie the game 63-63. The Lady Hawks buckled down defensively to hold UIndy (6-16, 4-8 GLVC) scoreless for the final 15 seconds.





QU opened up overtime with the first six points. The Greyhounds made a run, but Cunningham helped the Lady Hawks hold off UIndy with a layup and a pair of free throws which proved crucial when Devin Ferguson hit a buzzer-beating three.

The Lady Hawks were locked in defensively in the first half going on a six minute and 16 second stretch holding the Greyhounds scoreless. QU went on a 15 point run during that time.

The Lady Hawks ran into foul trouble late in the first half as Maggie Cunningham, Carly Beebe, and Erin Mennemeyer each picked up their second foul. The Greyhounds went on an eight point run to take the Lady Hawks into halftime with QU leading 28-21.

QU scored seven points in the first seven minutes of play in the third quarter as the Greyhounds gained the lead 38-36 following a seven point run from UIndy.

The Greyhounds had a six point lead with one minute remaining. QU Carly Beebe hit a runner in the paint to pull within 4 points. Maggie Cunningham grabbed one of her team-leading five steals with 35 seconds to play and found Anika Webster for a fast break lay in to cut the lead to two. Sarah Costello missed the front end of a trip to the line, but made the second to five the Greyhounds the three point lead before Kara Gerbus tied it.

Anika Webster led the Lady Hawks with 18 points. Webster had 15 of those points in the second half and overtime. Kara Gerbus notched 16 points for QU. Maggie Cunningham scored 14 points and led the team with five steals. Carly Beebe finished with 12 points and seven assists. The Lady Hawks scored 28 points off of 24 turnovers.

QU will finish their four-game road trip in Rensselaer, Ind. where they face Saint Joseph's College on Saturday, Feb. 6, at 1 p.m.
