#23 QU Defense Locks Down William Jewell

LIBERTY, Mo. - The 23rd ranked Quincy University women's basketball relied on hot shooting early and strong defense late to earn a 68-57 win at William Jewell College on Saturday (Feb. 20). QU was 9-of-21 from three and limited WJC to 27% from the field in the game. The Cardinals got hot from three late, but finished 7-of-22. The Lady Hawks were 21-of-24 from the free-throw line.

It was all Quincy (22-4, 13-4 GLVC) in the first quarter. QU strung together runs of seven and 10 points to lead 23-8 at the end of the first period. QU hit four 3-pointers in the first quarter from Carly Beebe, Nikia Edom, Anika Webster, and Rachel Ruzevich.

The Cardinals (10-18, 5-12 GLVC) struggled with fouls in the first half. QU went on an eight point run in the second quarter with six straight free throws. The Lady Hawks entered halftime leading 39-19.

William Jewell's halftime adjustments helped the Cardinals inch closer in the second half. WJC hit two triples and a layup to pull within eight points with under four minutes left in the game.

The Lady Hawks converted all six free throws in the final four minutes of play and held William Jewell to just five points the rest of the way.

The Lady Hawks were led by Nikia Edom with 15 points. Edom was 3-of-5 from three. Maggie Cunningham scored 11 points. Anika Webster came off the bench for 11 points including two threes. Kara Gerbus scored 10 points. Erin Mennemeyer finished with eight rebounds and eight points.

The Lady Hawks will play host to Truman State University on Thursday, Feb. 25 for Senior Night and the final regular season game. The winner of the QU and TSU game will earn a bye in the GLVC Championship Tournament first round. Tip-off in Pepsi Arena is scheduled for 5:15 p.m.
