Lady Hawks Clinch GLVC Bye with Win over Bulldogs

QUINCY, Ill. - The 23rd ranked Quincy University women's basketball team clinched a first round bye in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament after a win at home on Senior Night against Truman State University, 65-53. QU's senior point guard, Maggie Cunningham, took over in her last game at Pepsi Arena with 23 points, six rebounds, and three steals. The Lady Hawk defense limited TSU to 32.3% from the field and 34.8% from three.

Senior Night started off slow as emotions ran high for the Lady Hawks (23-4, 14-4 GLVC). QU failed to score in the first five and a half minutes of play.

The Bulldogs (19-9, 13-5 GLVC) scored the first eight points of the game with a pair of threes and a layup in the first five minutes.

The Lady Hawks went on an 11-0 run triggered by a Maggie Cunningham three from the corner. On the next possession, senior Carly Beebe got a steal and a fast break layup to put QU in high gear. The Lady Hawks ended the quarter with an 11-8 lead.

The Lady Hawks expanded their lead in the second quarter outscoring Truman State 19-10. Maggie Cunningham scored nine points in the first half. Anika Webster scored eight points before halftime.

QU pushed the lead to 17 points to start the third quarter with a five point run.

Truman State would creep back into the game with a 19-14 third quarter edge making the score 44-37 in favor of QU entering the final period of play.

Cunningham drained a three to start the fourth and extend the lead to 10 points.

The Bulldogs answered with an eight point run to make it a four point game.

Cunningham responded with back-to-back layups with the second being an and-one that fired up the bench. After the make on the three-point play and an Erin Mennemeyer layup the following possession, the Lady Hawks were back to an 11-point lead. Kara Gerbus hit a dagger of a three from the corner to end Truman State's hopes with under four minutes to play.

Cunningham closed out the game with six straight points to finish with 23 points on the night. Anika Webster scored 15 points for the Lady Hawks off the bench.

Courtney Strait scored 15 points for Truman State in the second half and finished with 17. Kasey Gassensmith had 10 points in the second stanza and finished with 13.

The Lady Hawks honored seniors, Carly Beebe, Maggie Cunningham, Kara Gerbus, Tori Kuhn, Erin Mennemeyer, and Cierra Young following their 45th victory in four seasons in Pepsi Arena.

The Lady Hawks will wait to see who they play in the GLVC Championship Quarterfinals next Thursday, March 3rd, in St. Charles, Mo at Family Arena. The time of the game is to be determined.
