#20 Lady Hawks Edge UW-Parkside, 70-67, in Creating Memories Game

QUINCY, Ill. - The No. 20 Quincy University women's basketball team dominated the glass against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside today to earn a 70-67 win in Pepsi Arena. QU grabbed 35 rebounds with 11 on the offensive glass. UW-Parkside finished with 27 rebounds. The Lady Hawks made a living on second chance points outscoring the Rangers in that category by eight points. Erin Mennemeyer led the Lady Hawks with 14 rebounds including six on the offensive end.

The Lady Hawks (20-4, 11-4 GLVC) struggled to find a rhythm to start the game, but QU's defense held the Rangers (13-10, 7-8 GLVC) to two points in the first six minutes of play, and just seven points in the first quarter.

The slow offensive starts for both teams did not last for long as the Lady Hawks found their stroke from distance. Maggie Cunningham hit a three to get the ball rolling and Carly Beebe followed suit. Anika Webster and Sarah Schumacher took over on the post scoring the final eight points of the first quarter for QU giving the Lady Hawks a 16-7 lead at the break.

The Rangers countered with three straight treys to pull within three. They would take the lead a minute and a half later to complete a 13-1 run.

Carly Beebe calmed the storm with a three and the shootout was on. The Lady Hawks traded threes for twos as Anika Webster and Jessie Rabas both knocked down threes from the same corner. Again, Sarah Schumacher and Anika Webster played strong inside to close out the first half giving QU a 34-28 lead.

The Rangers outscored QU 15-11 in the third quarter to inch to a two point game entering the fourth quarter.

The Rangers would go on to tie the game in the fourth, but the Lady Hawks were just starting to heat up. With under six minutes to play, Kara Gerbus converted a jumper from the elbow. On the next possession, Maggie Cunningham hit a three to extend the lead to seven. Cunningham would find an opening on the back side and Erin Mennemeyer connected with her for two more threes on the next two possessions. Kara Gerbus made a nice move in the paint for a lay-in and a seven point lead with three minutes to play.

The Rangers went on a 7-1 run to put the pressure on QU with 18 seconds left. Maggie Cunningham was calm, cool, and collected at the line knocking down four free throws to give the Lady Hawks a 70-67 win.

Cunningham led the Lady Hawks with 21 points, scoring 16 in the second half. Anika Webster finished 5-of-6 from the field scoring 17 points. Erin Mennemeyer grabbed 14 rebounds for the Lady Hawks and finished with nine points. Carly Beebe and Sarah Schumacher both scored eight points.

The Lady Hawks connected on eight threes hitting 50% in the game. For every three-pointer made, pledges donated money to the Lady Hawks' Creating Memories Foundation. The Creating Memories Foundation gives a special memory to a cancer patient from Blessing Cancer Research Center in Quincy, Ill. by donating a $500 check to the patient. Tami Cain and her family were on hand to accept a $500 check prior to today's game. Tami and her family will be taking a vacation to Branson, Mo. to see some shows and enjoy some family time. The Lady Hawks have presented 14 cancer patients with funds for special memories over the past four seasons. Donations are always accepted as the Lady Hawks present donations to patients all year round. Please contact head coach Jeni Garber, garbeje@quincy.edu, for more information. All generosity is greatly appreciated.

The Lady Hawks will travel to Kansas City, Mo. on Thursday to play Rockhurst University for the second time this season. QU defeated Rockhurst at home, 67-66, on a last second runner by Maggie Cunningham. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:15 p.m.
