Hawks Cruise To 90-70 Win Over MacMurray

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team blocked 13 shots and had five players score in double figures as the Hawks cruised past MacMurray, 90-70, on Wednesday (Dec. 7) night at Pepsi Arena to run their winning streak to eight.
 
The Hawks (9-1) shot 53 percent (38-for-72) from the field and connected on 10 3-pointers in the game while limited the Highlanders (0-9) to just 37 percent (25-for-67) shooting.
 
The Highlanders played the Hawks tight in the first seven minutes as a jumper by Riley Spencer tied the game at 16-16 with 13:18 left in the first half.
 
Senior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) then knocked down two straight 3-pointers to give the Hawks a six-point cushion. QU still did not lead by double digits until a 3-pointer by sophomore wing Marcus Hinton (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central/Lindenwood) with 8:40 left the first half made it 30-19.
 
Quincy led by as many as 14 points in the first half and took a 51-39 lead into halftime.
 
MacMurray, which shot 52 percent in the first half on a variety of mid-range jumpers, saw the Hawks lift their play on the defensive end in the second half. Quincy held the Highlanders to just 24 percent shooting (8-for-34) in the final 20 minutes.
 
The Hawks were also dominant with their paint defense, allowing only four points in the paint in the second half and 14 overall. Quincy blocked 13 shots in the game, including four each from senior forwards Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) and Joseph Tagarelli (Waunakee, Wis.).
 
The Hawks pulled away in the second half with a 22-6 run that spanned nearly nine minutes and pushed their lead to 25 points.
 
McGaughey led the Hawks with 21 points on 9-for-12 shooting. Tagarelli added 15 points and shot 7-for-9 from the floor. Senor tacked on 14 points to go with six assists and five boards.
 
Senior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) scored 12 points and senior guard Grant Meyer (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek) tacked on 10. Hinton scored eight points and collected a game-high eight rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench.
 
Marshall Corbin and Tim Frazier scored 12 points each for the Highlanders. The Hawks won the battle on the glass, 42-38, and led in fastbreak points, 18-4.
 
The Hawks will return to Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Saturday (Dec. 10) at 3:15 p.m. when they take on rival Truman State at Pepsi Arena.
