Winning Streak At Nine As Hawks Nip Truman, 91-90

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team gutted out a 91-90 win over rival Truman State, 91-90, on Saturday (Dec. 10) at Pepsi Arena to run its winning streak to nine games and remain undefeated in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. The win snapped the Hawks' eight-game losing streak to the Bulldogs.

Senior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Waunakee, Wis.) led the Hawks with 29 points and 17 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season.

In a game that saw 12 lead changes and 11 tie scores, the Hawks made the necessary plays in the final minute to seal the win.

The Hawks (10-1, 3-0 GLVC) had the ball and an 89-86 lead with two minutes to play after a steal by Tagarelli. Quincy missed two 3-pointers on the possession, but offensive rebounds by Tagarelli and senior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) kept the possession alive for more than a full minute.

After getting a steal, Jake Velky got to the rim to force a foul and knocked down both free throws to cut it to 89-88 with 54 seconds left. Velky finished with a game-high 35 points.

Quincy then committed a traveling violation and Velky drained two more free throws after a foul put him on the line with 23 seconds left.

Trailing 90-89, the Hawks turned to Tagarelli, who got trapped in a triple team under the basket and absorbed contact while still managing to flip the ball in the basket to give the Hawks a 91-90 lead with 12 seconds left.

Tagarelli missed the free throw before senior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) ripped the ball from Cory Myers and was fouled with three seconds left. Washington missed both free throws, but a 3-pointer by Nathan Messer at the buzzer clanged off the rim to give the win to the Hawks.

After leading by just one point, 36-35, with six minutes left in the first half, the Hawks closed the frame on a 21-11 run to take a 57-46 lead into the break.

Quincy led by as many as 14, 64-50, in the second half after a 3-pointer by senior guard Grant Meyer (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek) with 18 minutes left. The Bulldogs (8-2, 2-1 GLVC) were able to cut into that lead by double-teaming Tagarelli in the post and knocking down 3-pointers. They took their first lead of the half with 12:32 remaining before McGaughey's three-point play gave it back to Quincy, 74-72.

The visitors went up by six points, 82-76, but McGaughey, Washington and Tagarelli all scored to knot the game at 82-82 with 5:26 to play. The game remained within three points the rest of the way.

Washington finished with 21 points and hit five 3-pointers while McGaughey added 17 points, three rebounds and three blocks. Senior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) had 10 points and dished out six assists. Meyer finished with nine points as all five Quincy starters played at least 31 minutes.

The Hawks shot 52 percent (33-for-64) from the field while the Bulldogs hit at a 50 percent (30-for-60) clip. Truman, which came in as the fourth-best 3-point shooting team in the nation, shot just 35 percent (8-for-23) from long distance. QU held a 34-30 lead on the glass.

The Hawks will take their final exams this week before returning to the floor on Saturday against Salem International in the opener of the QU Subway Holiday Classic. Tip-off is set for 3:15 p.m. at Pepsi Arena. Lewis and Cedarville will play at 1 p.m.
