Hawks Shoot Past Tigers, 105-70, In Subway Holiday Classic

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team shot nearly 70 percent from the field and six players scored in double figures as the Hawks turned in a 105-70 victory over Salem International on the first day of the QU Subway Holiday Classic on Saturday (Dec. 17) afternoon at Pepsi Arena.
 
The Hawks (11-1) have now won 10 straight games heading into Sunday's contest against Cedarville, which lost to Lewis in Saturday's first game, 65-63, after a buzzer beater rimmed out.
 
Quincy used an 11-0 run in a two-minute stretch of the first half to push their lead to 25-11 on back-to-back 3-pointers by senior guards Grant Meyer (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek) and Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central).
 
The lead went up to 21, 44-23, with 5:11 left in the first half after triples by senior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) and senior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West).
 
The Tigers (1-10) battled back into the game by closing the half on a 19-6 run. QU held a 50-42 lead at the break as McGaughey scored 13 of his game-high 22 points in the first half.
 
In the second half, the Hawks were able to speed up the game and get in transition. They scored 12 fast-break points after halftime and shot 74.2 percent (23-for-31) in the final 20 minutes as they outscored the Tigers, 55-28. Overall, the Hawks shot 69.4 percent (43-for-62) from the field.
 
McGaughey shot 10-for-11 from the field and had seven rebounds and three blocks. Senor scored 15 points and dished out nine assists while Tagarelli had 15 points and four boards. Washington scored 14 points while senior center Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.) and sophomore wing Marcus Hinton (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central/Lindenwood) had 10 points apiece. Hoover and a game-high eight rebounds in just 15 minutes.
 
The Hawks won the battle on the glass, 37-34, and blocked eight shots in the game. Jarius Farrow led the Tigers with 14 points.
 
The Hawks will return to the floor at 3:15 p.m. on Sunday (Dec. 18) when they take on Cedarville to cap the QU Subway Holiday Classic.
