Hawks Win Classic Title With 104-64 Win Over Cedarville

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team got off to a fast start and never looked back, winning their 11th straight game, 104-64, over Cedarville in the finale of the QU Subway Holiday Classic at Pepsi Arena on Sunday (Dec. 18) afternoon.
 
The Hawks (12-1) won a share of the tournament championship with Lewis for their eighth title in the 17-year history of the event. The Flyers toppled Salem International, 111-61, in Sunday's opener.
 
It is the first time the Hawks have scored at least 100 points in two straight games since Dec. 16 and Dec. 20, 2007 when they did it against Lincoln and Harris Stowe.
 
Quincy never trailed on Sunday, using a 7-0 run to take a 14-6 lead with senior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) capping the run with a 3-pointer in transition.
 
The Hawks built their lead to as many as 19 points, 46-27, in the first half and took a 50-36 lead into halftime. Senor had the offense clicking with six assists in the first 20 minutes.

Cedarville (5-6) stayed in the game early in the second half, cutting the lead down to nine points, 55-46, with 18 minutes to play. The Hawks scored eight straight points with two baskets coming from senior center Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.) to take a 72-51 lead with 13:34 remaining.
 
The Hawks continued to hound the Yellow Jackets defensively in the second half, holding them to just 38 percent (11-for-29) after halftime. Meanwhile, the Hawks connected at a 59 percent (20-for-34) clip. For the game, QU shot 55 percent (39-for-71) from the field and went 12-for-25 (48 percent) from 3-point range.
 
Senior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Waunakee, Wis.) matched a season high with 30 points on 10-for-16 shooting from the field. He also went 10-for-11 from the free throw line, collected nine rebounds and blocked three shots. Tagarelli was named the QU Subway Holiday Classic Most Valuable Player.
 
Senior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) joined him on the all-tournament team and scored 18 points with four rebounds and two blocks.
 
Hoover scored 12 points and pulled down eight rebounds while senior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) chipped in 12 points. Senor finished with 10 points, seven assists and three steals. Sophomore guard Damon Patterson (Florissant, Mo./Chaminade) scored nine points on 4-for-5 shooting.
 
The Hawks won the battle on the glass, 40-32, and committed just six turnovers. Patrick Bain scored 15 points off the bench.
 
Cedarville's J.C. Faubion, who scored 11 points, was named to the all-tournament team. He was joined by Tagarelli, McGaughey, Lewis's Miles Simelton and Salem International's John Chandler.
 
The Hawks will now head home for Christmas break. They will return to the Pepsi Arena floor on New Year's Eve for a 3:15 p.m. tip-off against Culver-Stockton.
