Hawks Win 12th Straight Heading Back Into GLVC Play

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team jumped out to an early lead and never trailed as the Hawks coasted to a 91-62 win over visiting Culver-Stockton on Saturday (Dec. 31) afternoon at Pepsi Arena to close out calendar year 2016.

The Hawks (13-1), who are receiving votes in the national coaches' poll and are ranked No. 22 in the D2SIDA media poll, will resume Great Lakes Valley Conference play next week having won 12 straight games.

Quincy scored the first five points on Saturday on a couple of transition buckets, the first a layup by senior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) and the second a 3-pointer by senior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast).

The Hawks had the Wildcats (1-11) doubled up with 7:51 remaining in the first half, 32-16, after a couple free throws by senior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Waunakee, Wis.). The Hawks took advantage of Culver-Stockton's foul trouble by going to the line 21 times in the first half.

Quincy out-scored the Wildcats, 22-4, in the paint in the first half as Senor filled up his score line with 15 of his game-high 23 points coming in the first 20 minutes.

The Hawks led, 44-34, at the break and pushed the advantage to 20, 61-41, just six minutes into the second half after Washington's 3-pointer.

The Hawks shot 50 percent (32-for-64) from the field and held the Wildcats to a 35 percent (21-for-60) mark and 17 turnovers. QU had advantages in fast-break points (15-0), points in the paint (48-12) and points off turnovers (16-8).

Senor added seven assists and four steals to his 23 points. He shot 8-for-11 from the field. Tagarelli chipped in 19 points, going 11-for-15 from the free throw line. Senior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) had a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double. Washington shot 6-for-9 and finished with 13 points.

The Hawks had a 47-34 lead in rebounds and had a 17-to-11 assist-turnover ratio. Adrian Fernandez led the Wildcats with 21 points and six rebounds.
