Hawks Win 13th Straight On Tagarelli's Game-Winner

LEBANON, Ill. – Senior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Waunakee, Wis./Kirkwood CC) hit a turnaround jumper from the left block with 1.5 seconds left to give the Quincy University men's basketball team a 79-77 win in a grind-it-out game at McKendree on Thursday (Jan. 5) night at the Harry M. Statham Sports Center.

The win extended the Hawks' (14-1, 4-0 GLVC) winning streak to 13 games and kept them unbeaten in conference play.

The Hawks looked like they might run away with the game in the first half when they built a 16-point lead with three minutes left until halftime. The Bearcats (6-5, 0-4 GLVC) cut the advantage in half with an 8-0 run to close the half as QU took a 42-34 lead into the break.

In the second half, the Bearcats continued to cut into the lead, tying the game at 59-59 with just under 10 minutes left. They took their first lead of the game with seven minutes left, 65-64, and from there it was a grind-out game.

Senior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) converted a three-point play with 4:26 left to give QU a 73-68 lead. His layup with 1:27 remaining pushed the lead back to five, 77-72.

After the Bearcats missed a couple free throws, the Hawks missed on the other end and Nate Michael sank two free throws to cut the lead to 77-74 with 34 seconds left.

The Hawks turned the ball over on their next possession and David Franklin got a layup and finished a three-point play to tie the game at 77 with 15.6 seconds remaining.

Following a Hawks timeout, they ran a play to free up Tagarelli on the block and the All-GLVC standout hit the jumper over a couple of Bearcats players.

Franklin's fallaway from 35 feet hit the corner of the backboard on the Bearcats' ensuing possession to seal the win for the Hawks.

Tagarelli scored 27 points and collected 11 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the season. He also had three of the Hawks' nine blocks. Senior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) scored nine points, dished out eight assists and collected seven rebounds.

McGaughey scored 17 points to go with seven boards and five assists. Senior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) scored 12 points and corralled five boards. Senior guard Grant Meyer (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek) scored all 10 of his points in the first half.

Michael Jackson led the Bearcats with 18 points while Franklin chipped in a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

The Bearcats won the battle on the glass, 47-39, and out-shot the Hawks 44 percent to 43 percent.

The Hawks will resume GLVC play on Saturday (Jan. 7) at 3 p.m. when they travel to Illinois Springfield to take on the Prairie Stars.
