Hawks Close Year With 65-56 Win Over Missouri Valley

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team closed out the year 2016 with a 65-56 nonconference win over Missouri Valley on Saturday (Dec. 31) afternoon at Pepsi Arena.
 
The Hawks (3-10) shot a season-best 47.2 percent (25-for-53) from the field and held the Vikings (7-5) to a 34.5 percent (19-for-55) mark to earn their third win of the season.
 
Quincy settled in early offensively, going on a 17-6 run to start the game as senior guard Nikia Edom (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East/Murray State) sank three straight 3-pointers, all of which were assisted by different players. QU finished with 17 assists on 25 made field goals.
 
The Hawks led by as many as 12 points on two occasions in the first quarter and took a 22-12 lead into the second.
 
The Vikings cut the lead down to five points, 34-29, by halftime as the Hawks committed six turnovers in the second quarter.
 
The Hawks kept the Vikings at arm's reach the rest of the way. Another Edom 3-pointer with 3:18 remaining in the third quarter pushed the Hawks' advantage to 49-37.
 
Missouri Valley cut the lead down to three points, 55-52, with 5:42 remaining in the game, but junior forward Anika Webster (Springfield, Ill.) responded with an 8-0 run by herself to push the lead back to 11 with three minutes to play.
 
Webster scored 11 of her game-high 17 points in the second half. Edom knocked down five 3-pointers to finish with 15 points while senior guard Lauren Gronewold (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) added 12 points – 10 coming in the first half.
 
The Hawks kept a slight edge on the boards, 33-32, led by seven rebounds from senior guard Selina Barnes (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sierra/Southeastern CC), who also had six points.
 
Ashley Ward paced the Vikings with 13 points on 5-for-7 shooting. Deidra McCoy chipped in 12 points and six rebounds.
 
The Hawks will resume Great Lakes Valley Conference play for good on Thursday (Jan. 5) at 5:30 p.m. at McKendree.
