Hawks Close Out Rockhurst For Seventh Straight Win

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team used a 13-2 first-half run to create separation and then held off Rockhurst in the final minutes to pull out a 75-68 road win on Saturday (Dec. 3) afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

The win was Quincy's seventh straight and gave the Hawks (8-1, 2-0 GLVC) a road weekend sweep to start the conference schedule. It is the first seven-game winning streak for QU since it won the first 16 games of the 2009-10 campaign.

On Saturday, Rockhurst held an 8-6 lead before back-to-back 3-pointers by senior guards Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) and Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) gave QU a 12-8 edge.

After a couple free throws by Rockhurst, Washington hit another three followed by a mid-range jumper by Senor. Two free throws by senior center Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.) gave Quincy a 19-10 lead.

Overall, Quincy held Rockhurst without a field goal for nearly seven minutes during that stretch.

QU took a 38-28 lead into halftime despite Rockhurst shooting 55.6 percent (10-for-18) from the field in the first half. RU was hurt by poor free throw shooting, going 7-for-17 (41.2 percent) before the break.

Quincy led by as many as 16 points in the second half after scoring the first six points after halftime on Senor's 3-pointer and a three-point play by senior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Waunakee, Wis.).

Another three by Senor with 9:50 left gave Quincy a 62-48 lead, but the visitors went without a basket for the next 7:04 as Rockhurst trimmed QU's lead to 64-62.

Quincy locked in on the defensive side of the ball at the end of its offensive drought, keeping Rockhurst off the board for five straight possessions. Tagarelli's bucket with 2:46 left ended QU's cold spell and pushed the lead to 66-62.

Mason Loewen split a pair of free throws on Rockhurst's next possession and sophomore forward Marcus Hinton (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central/Lindenwood) drilled a clutch 3-pointer off a Tagarelli pass to make it 69-63.

Tagarelli made a driving finger-roll with 1:29 remaining to keep Quincy ahead, 71-65.

Senor closed the game with four free throws in the final 24 seconds to seal the win. He led the Hawks with 22 points, four rebounds and six assists against just one turnover in 38 minutes.

Tagarelli recorded his sixth double-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Washington scored 17 points on 6-for-9 shooting.

Rockhurst out-shot Quincy, 47.9 percent to 45.5 percent, but the visitors had a 37-29 edge on the glass. Connor Evans and Andrew Ellwanger led the home team with 13 points apiece.

Quincy will return to Pepsi Arena for the rest of 2016, beginning Wednesday (Dec. 7) when it welcomes MacMurray for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
