Buzzer Beater Sends Wildcats Past Hawks

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team fell in nonconference action on Friday (Dec. 16) night at Pepsi Arena as Culver-Stockton hit a layup with 0.2 seconds remaining to take a 57-55 win.

Sophomore guard Taylor Hickey (Keokuk, Iowa/Burlington Notre Dame) hit a 3-pointer with 22 seconds left to tie the game at 55-55. Following a Culver timeout, the Wildcats (6-6) ran time off the clock before Lacey Clark hit a running layup with 0.2 seconds left. QU could not get off a shot before the buzzer on the ensuing possession.

The game was tight throughout as neither team had more than a five-point lead at any time. The Hawks (2-9) maintained an edge for most of the first half before a 3-pointer by Terra Helm tied the game at 25-25 going into halftime.

Quincy used a 9-0 run over a three-minute stretch in the fourth quarter to turn a 42-38 deficit into a 47-42 lead. Junior forward Anika Webster (Springfield, Ill.) had five points in that stretch while senior forward Cha Cha Williams (Bolingbrook, Ill./Seton Hill) had four.

The Wildcats cut into that margin and took a 53-49 lead with 2:23 to play on Clark's 3-pointer. Senior guard Nikia Edom (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East/Murray State) hit a mid-range jumper with 1:48 left, but a bucket by Katelyn Guehne pushed CSC's lead back to 55-52 with one minute left.

Clark then missed on a pair of free throws, keeping the game at one possession. Sophomore center Sarah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis.) collected an offensive rebound that led to Hickey's triple from the left wing.

Webster led the Hawks with a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double. She was 6-for-12 from the field. Edom added 12 points on 5-for-9 shooting. Williams, Hickey and Schumacher had six points apiece.

The Hawks won the battle on the glass, 38-30, but turned the ball over 21 times. QU led in second chance points, 21-10. The Wildcats shot 45 percent (24-for-53) from the field and limited the hosts to a 36 percent (22-for-61) mark.

The Hawks will return to the floor on Monday in Springfield, Mo. when they take on Drury in a nonconference game. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m.
