Fast Start Helps Hawks Fly Past Cardinals

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team scored the first 12 points on Thursday (Dec. 1) night on its way to an 85-60 win over William Jewell in Liberty, Mo. The game was the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both teams.
 
The Hawks (7-1, 1-0 GLVC), who entered as the second-best shooting team in the nation, shot 57.1 percent (32-for-56) from the field and had five players score in double figures. QU also connected on 63.6 percent (14-for-22) of its 3-point attempts with senior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) going 6-for-7 from long distance. He finished with a game high 24 points.
 
Quincy opened the game by hitting its first six shots as all five starters made a field goal in that stretch. Senior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) capped the run with a 3-pointer that gave the Hawks a 15-3 lead.
 
The Hawks also set the tone on the defensive side, forcing three turnovers on the Cardinals' first four possessions.
 
After the Hawks' opening burst, they maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way. They held the Cardinals (3-3, 0-1 GLVC) to just 34.3 percent (21-for-61) shooting for the game.
 
Senior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) filled up the stat sheet with 15 points, eight rebounds, three blocks, two assists and two steals. He shot 6-for-9 from the field and made all three of his 3-point tries. Senior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Waunakee, Wis.) matched McGaughey's 15 points to go with five rebounds and five assists.
 
Senor chipped in 11 points and senior guard Grant Meyer (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek) added 10 points.
 
The Hawks, who averaged 18 turnovers per game entering the contest, committed just nine miscues on Thursday. They also turned 11 William Jewell turnovers into 21 points.
 
The Hawks will look for their seventh straight win and a GLVC road sweep on Saturday (Dec. 3) at 3:15 p.m. at Rockhurst.
