Hawks Win Wild One In Wisconsin

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's volleyball team overcame two match points in the fifth set to claim a wild 25-23, 25-16, 22-25, 18-25, 18-16 win over host UW-Parkside on Friday (Nov. 4) night in Somers, Wis.

The Hawks (16-10, 10-4 GLVC) have now won five matches in a row for the second time this season. They are in sole possession of second place in the GLVC West with four matches to play. The top three teams in each division and two wild cards will qualify for the GLVC Tournament.

On Friday, the Hawks trailed in Set 1, 22-20, before going on a 4-0 run with sophomore Marissa Gonzalez (San Antonio, Texas/Reagan) on the serve to take a 24-22 lead. After a point by UWP, sophomore Taylor McMonagle (Green Bay, Wis./Denmark) slammed a kill for the win. The Hawks hit .314 in the first frame.

The Hawks cruised in the second set by hitting .213 as a team and holding the Rangers (12-15, 8-6 GLVC) to a .020 mark. Senior Kayla Hamilton (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) put down five kills in the set.

The Rangers bounced back in the next two sets as they established themselves defensively. Quincy hit just .000 in the third set.

Set 5 saw 14 tie scores and nine lead changes as the momentum swung back-and-forth on every point. Only two times – other than the final margin – did either team lead by two points. The home team had a 10-8 lead, but juniors Bekah Raebel (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) and Jessica Licurgo (Goodyear, Ariz./Sandra Day O'Connor) tied it with back-to-back kills.

The Hawks took a 12-11 lead on a double block by junior Bobbie Eastman (Fenton, Mich.) and senior Emily Lindemulder (Homer Glen, Ill./Chicago Christian), but the Rangers scored the next two points before getting to match point at 14-13.

Lindemulder fought it off with a kill and an error by Kasey Davis gave Quincy a 15-14 lead. Davis followed with consecutive kills to give Parkside another chance at match point, 16-15. Raebel answered with a kill before an attacking error gave QU match point at 17-16. Raebel's kill near the back line gave Quincy the win.

Raebel led the Hawks with 16 kills (.163). Lindemulder tacked on 13 kills (.391) and four blocks. Eastman had 12 kills (.222) and Licurgo was the fourth player in double figures with 10 kills (.200). Hamilton recorded nine kills (.148).

Junior libero Rachel Shores (Huntley, Ill.) led the back row with 23 digs while senior Nicole Allaria (Edwardsville, Ill.) added 21 and McMonagle chipped in 20. Freshman setter Sara Rathbun (Stanford, Ill./Olympia) had a double-double with 48 assists and 14 digs.

The Hawks will be tested again on Saturday when they take on GLVC East leading and 18th-ranked Lewis (20-6, 13-1 GLVC) in Romeoville, Ill. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
