Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Brendan Bittner

#6 Rockhurst Comes Back To Beat Quincy, 2-1

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but No. 6 Rockhurst scored twice in the second half to defeat Quincy, 2-1, in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament semifinal on Friday (Nov. 4) afternoon in Indianapolis.

Quincy (12-5-2) will now await the announcement of the NCAA Tournament field on Monday at 5:30 p.m. CT. The selection show will air on NCAA.com. The Hawks were ranked No. 4 in the latest NCAA Midwest Regional rankings.

QU was able to take the lead in the first half despite withstanding waves of pressure at times from Rockhurst.

In the 23rd minute, junior forward Artan Emini (Yorkville, Ill.) received a pass near midfield from junior midfielder Chris McArthur (St. Louis, Mo./CBC). Emini carried the ball for about 20 yards before unleashing a shot from 28 yards out that struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced over the goal line to give QU a 1-0 lead. Emini, an All-GLVC second team selection, now has three goals on the year.

Meanwhile, in the first half, junior goalkeeper Nate Griffin (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) made several remarkable saves to keep Rockhurst, the tournament's top seed, off the board. He finished with nine saves in the game, including seven in the first half.

Quincy held onto its lead until the 72nd minute when Andrew Patke sent in a cross to the near post for Gianluca Bottoni, who slipped it under Griffin from a tight angle to tie the game at 1-1.

Less than five minutes before the end of regulation, Brian O'Neal scored the game-winner, recovering his own rebound and scoring over the top from the edge of the box.

Rockhurst held a 19-8 advantage in shots, including 11-4 on shots on goal. RU also led in corner kicks, 6-4.

Rockhurst will now play against the winner of No. 3-seed Southern Indiana and No. 7-seed Indianapolis in the GLVC Championship on Sunday.
