Hawks Fall In PK Shootout in NCAA Tournament

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team saw its season come to an end in the first round of the NCAA Division II Tournament as the Hawks fell to Southern Indiana in penalty kicks, 3-1, after a 2-2 tie in two overtimes in Kansas City on Friday (Nov. 11) night.

The game will go into the record books as a tie, but the No. 4-seeded Screaming Eagles (13-3-4) advanced to play top-seeded Rockhurst on Sunday. Quincy (12-5-3) was the No. 5 seed in the regional.

The Hawks trailed early in the game as Riley Belding took advantage of a long throw-in by the Eagles and scored his second goal of the season in the seventh minute. Drew Albert was credited with the assist.

Southern Indiana held that lead into halftime, holding an 8-5 edge in total shots, 4-2 in shots on goal.

The Hawks gathered more momentum in the second half and were rewarded in the 51st minute. Junior forward Artan Emini (Yorkville, Ill.) collected a long ball near the end line and sent in a low cross that took a deflection and came straight to junior forward Jordan Stephens (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell), who scored on a clinical finish. It was his fifth goal of the season and Emini's third assist.

The game was still tied at 1-1 in the 81st minute when Stephens had possession of the ball inside the goal box and was brought down by a USI defender for a penalty kick. Junior midfielder Chris McArthur (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) coolly converted from the spot to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead with less than 10 minutes to play.

But just 26 seconds later, the Screaming Eagles scored the equalizer. The Hawks were unable to completely clear a blocked shot in the box and it fell to Pedro Castro, who beat QU keeper Nate Griffin (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) to his lower left side.

The Hawks had their best chance in the overtime in the 105th minute. Sophomore forward Eddie Plesha (Normal, Ill./Normal Community) got free behind the USI defense and was fouled just outside the box, but McArthur's free kick from 20 yards sailed just over the bar.

In the penalty shootout, both keepers, Griffin and Adam Zehme, made saves in the first round of kicks. In the second round, senior midfielder Tommy Koerper (St. Louis, Mo./Trinity Catholicb) scored, but Brian Fischer responded to tie at 1-1 through two kicks.

Zehme then made two outstanding saves on the Hawks' next two kicks and Sean Rickey and Cesar Alba converted for the Screaming Eagles to send them through to the second round.

Southern Indiana had an 18-12 lead in shots, including a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. QU took a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The Hawks have advanced to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last three seasons, four of the last five and five of the last seven.
