Hawks Finish Puerto Rico Trip 2-0 with Win over Northwood

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - The Quincy University men's basketball team finished their trip to Puerto Rico with a 91-83 win over Northwood University to finish with an undefeated, 2-0 record on the Isle de Encanto. QU was solid from the free throw line, hitting 30-of-38 while NU took just 26 shots converting 19 from the charity stripe. The Hawks remained hot offensively scoring on 51.9% of their field goals.

The Hawks (6-1) saw solid numbers from their starters with four-of-five scoring in double digits. The Timberwolves (0-7) relied on bench scoring from Kyle Godfrey, Jure Prus, and PJ Weaver.

Quincy shot lights out in the first half scoring 57.1% from the floor. The Hawks were 11-of-12 from the line helping QU to a 48-28 lead at halftime.

The Timberwolves shot 31.3% from the field, but grabbed 12 offensive boards in the first half to provide second chance opportunities.

Northwood started to press midway through the second half and started to force turnovers and easy transition buckets. The Timberwolves shot 50% in the second half. NU converted 24 points off of turnovers in the game while forcing Quincy into 20 turnovers.

The Hawks had a 25 point lead before a 19-2 Northwood run brought the Timberwolves back within striking distance. 

QU relied on their seniors to break the press and take control of the game. Von Washington III had a huge game for the Hawks, hitting a couple big threes down the stretch and knocking down 13-of-14 from the the line to total 34 points. 

Joseph Tagarelli finished the game with 16 points and 10 rebounds for his second double double of the trip. Herm Senor II scored 18 points and dished out six assists. Evan McGaughey added 11 points and six boards to the Hawk effort. 

Northwood was led by PJ Weaver with 16 points and Kyle Godfrey with 15 points. Both Weaver and Godfrey hit big threes down the stretch to keep the game close. The Timberwolves' leading scorer on the season, Matt Crowl, found himself in foul trouble in the first half with three personals and never got into a rhythm scoring just six points from the post.

The Hawks will start the Great Lakes Valley Conference season early this year. QU heads on the road to William Jewell College to face the Cardinals on Thursday, December 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Liberty, Mo. for the front half of the Kansas City swing.
