Hawks Fall Just Short Against #16 Winona State

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team had a three-point lead against No. 16 Winona State with four minutes left in the fourth quarter, but the Warriors pulled out a 70-66 win in the finale of the QU Subway Tip-Off Classic at Pepsi Arena on Saturday (Nov. 19) afternoon.

The Hawks (0-4), who have struggled offensively in the early portion of the season, shot a season-best 46.8 percent (22-for-47) from the field.

Quincy trailed by as many as 10 points in the second quarter, but used an 11-1 run over a six-minute stretch to tie the game at 24-24. The run was bolstered by a three 3-pointers by senior guard Nikia Edom (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East/Murray State). Sophomore post Sarah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis.) capped the run with a mid-range jumper with 1:25 left before halftime. The Warriors (4-1) took a 28-26 lead into the break on a jumper at the buzzer by Tara Roelofs.

Early in the third quarter, the Hawks took a 34-30 lead on a layup by junior forward Anika Webster (Springfield, Ill.) with 6:35 left in the quarter.

The third quarter saw seven tie scores and four lead changes in the third quarter alone as the Warriors took a 45-43 lead into the fourth.

Junior Megan Wienstroer (Okawville, Ill.) drained a 3-pointer with seven minutes left to tie the game at 50-50 and Schumacher's three-point play with 5:53 left gave Quincy a 53-52 lead.

Edom then connected after the Hawks got a stop, but a three by Jenny Tuttle tied the game at 55-55 with 3:53 to go. The Warriors extended their run to eight points and their lead to 60-55 on Tuttle's 3-pointer and layup. The Hawks only got as close as three points after that.

Schumacher led the Hawks with 16 points and six rebounds while Edom added 15 points on 6-for-8 shooting. Sophomore guard Jessie Rabas (De Pere, Wis.) chipped in nine points, five rebounds and four assists. Webster scored eight points and senior guard Selina Barnes (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sierra/Southeastern CC) scored seven points to go with five rebounds.

Roelefs led the Warriors with 21 points while Tuttle scored 14 of her 15 points in the second half. Winona State shot 49.1 percent (25-for-53) from the field.

Quincy had a 31-25 lead in rebounds, but the Warriors turned 17 QU turnovers into 23 points.
