Hawks Hang On For First Win on Wednesday

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team never trailed, but had to hold on in the final minute for a 73-70 win over Lincoln on Wednesday (Nov. 23) night at Pepsi Arena.

Senior guard Nikia Edom (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East/Murray State) scored 16 of her 22 points in the first half to lead the Hawks (1-4) to their first win of the season.

Edom got the Hawks started with a pair of 3-pointers to take an early 6-0 lead. They eventually led 12-2 after two free throws by junior forward Anika Webster (Springfield, Ill.) and had a 21-4 lead after the first quarter. The Hawks held the Blue Tigers (1-4) to just 18.2 percent (2-for-11) from the field in the opening frame.

The pace picked up in the second quarter with the teams combining for 47 points. Edom knocked down two 3-pointers in the quarter and the Hawks led 44-28 at halftime.

Quincy led by as many as 22 points, 52-30, in the third quarter after back-to-back threes by Edom and senior guard Selina Barnes (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sierra/Southeastern CC) with 6:12 left in the quarter. A banked-in 3-pointer by senior guard Rachel Ruzevich (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg/Moraine Valley CC) as the buzzer sounded at the end of the third gave the Hawks a 62-46 lead heading into the fourth.

The Blue Tigers climbed back into the game with an 11-0 run over a stretch of two-and-a-half minutes that cut the lead to 66-64 with 4:18 to play.

Azaria Nave's layup trimmed the Hawks' lead to one, 69-68 with 2:51 left, but she missed on an and-one opportunity.

After a Quincy turnover, the Hawks got a stop and senior forward Cha Cha Williams (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook/Seton Hill) converted on a short jumper to push the lead back to three. Shamirah Johnson's basket with 1:18 left cut it back to 71-70.

The Hawks missed a three on their next trip before junior guard Megan Wienstroer (Okawville, Ill.) snared a rebound on a miss and then knocked down a couple free throws with 7.7 seconds left.

After a timeout, Nave missed a 3-pointer from about four feet behind the line at the buzzer to give the Hawks the win.

Edom shot 8-for-10 from the field and hit 5-of-6 3-pointers to lead the Hawks. Senior guard Lauren Gronewold (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) scored 13 points on 6-for-6 shooting in 18 minutes off the bench. Williams and Webster scored 10 points apiece and combined to shoot 9-for-11.

The Hawks shot 44.4 percent (28-for-63) from the floor and held the Blue Tigers to a 43.1 percent (25-for-58) mark. Quincy owned a 40-29 edge on the glass.

The Hawks will return to the floor on Sunday (Nov. 27) at 1 p.m. when they take on Missouri Southern State at Pepsi Arena.
