Defense Leads Hawks To Sweep of Maryville

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's volleyball team used a terrific defensive performance and an efficient offensive attack to sweep host Maryville, 25-16, 25-23, 25-18, in St. Louis on Saturday (Hawktober 8) afternoon.

The Hawks (10-8, 5-4 GLVC) held the Saints (2-16, 1-8 GLVC) to a .070 hitting percentage – the lowest by a QU opponent this season.

Senior Emily Lindemulder (Homer Glen, Ill./Chicago Christian) led the strong defensive effort with eight blocks (two solo). The Hawks totaled a season-high 12 blocks in the match. Four players also registered double-digit digs in the three-set match, led by 16 each from junior Rachel Shores (Huntley, Ill.) and sophomore Taylor McMonagle (Green Bay, Wis./Denmark).

The Hawks methodically took control of Set 1 in the early-going, turning a 5-4 lead into a 13-8 advantage after Lindemulder and freshman Lauren Nadler (Charleston, Ill.) combined on a block. Quincy closed the set on an 8-1 run with Shores scoring the final four points on her serve.

Set 2 saw the teams exchange the lead eight times with 13 tie scores. With the score knotted at 23-23, Lindemulder put down consecutive kills to hand the Hawks a commanding two-set lead.

The Saints scored the first three points of the third set, but the Hawks rallied to score four straight points to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 6-4 lead – the last of those points coming on an ace by Shores. The Hawks controlled the remainder of the frame as McMonagle had seven kills in the set. Nadler, Lindemulder and McMonagle finished the set with three straight kills.

McMonagle led the Hawks with 13 kills (.343) on 35 swings with just one error. Lindemulder did not commit a hitting error, finishing with 10 kills on 20 attacks (.500). Junior Bekah Raebel (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) tacked on eight kills and 11 digs. Junior Miranda Rodriguez (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) had a double-double with 17 assists and 15 digs while freshman Sara Rathbun (Stanford, Ill./Olympia) added 15 assists and eight digs.

The Hawks now await their upcoming schedule at the Midwest Regional Crossover. Quincy will play three matches over the two-day event (Hawktober 14-15) in Aurora, Ill.
