Hawks Come Back To Win Crossover Opener

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's volleyball team trailed Trevecca Nazarene by a set entering the fourth, but the Hawks rallied for a 25-21, 21-25, 14-25, 25-16, 15-13 win in their opener of the Mizuno Midwest Region Crossover on Friday (Hawktober 14) at the Great Lakes Center in Aurora, Ill.

It was just the third time this season the Hawks (11-8) have gone to five sets all season and they improved their record to 2-1 in such matches.

The Hawks trailed the first set, 14-9, but outscored the Trojans (12-7), 16-7, the rest of the way, getting four kills from senior Emily Lindemulder (Homer Glen, Ill./Chicago Christian) in the opening frame.

Quincy dropped the next two sets and trailed in Set 4, 10-6. The Hawks still trailed, 14-11, but an attacking error, a block by Lindemulder and freshman Sara Rathbun (Stanford, Ill./Olympia) and consecutive kills by Lindemulder gave the Hawks a 15-14 edge.

The Hawks scored the next four points after that and cruised to a 25-16 win to force a fifth set.

In the fifth, the Hawks burst out to a 9-3 lead with two kills each coming from junior Bobbie Eastman (Fenton, Mich.) and sophomore Taylor McMonagle (Green Bay, Wis./Denmark). The Trojans got it as close as 13-12, but the Hawks' final two points came on blocks – the first a solo block by junior Jessica Licurgo (Goodyear, Ariz./Sandra Day O'Connor) and the second a combined block by Licurgo and Rathbun.

Lindemulder led a balanced attack for Quincy, which was out-hit .201 to .181. She finished with 14 kills (.273) and seven blocks (three solo). Licurgo tacked on 11 kills (.348) and three blocks.

McMonagle and junior Bekah Raebel (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) had nine kills apiece and Eastman added nine. Freshman Lauren Nadler (Charleston, Ill.) put down five kills (.364).

Junior Rachel Shores (Huntley, Ill.) led the back row with 15 digs, while McMonagle added 13. Rathbun distributed 32 assists and junior Miranda Rodriguez (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) dished out 12.

The Hawks will resume action at the Crossover on Saturday (Hawktober 15), taking on Michigan Tech (10 a.m.) and Ferris State (4 p.m.). Through the first day, the GLVC is 12-12 at the event. The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference went 14-8 and the Great Midwest Athletic Conference was 1-7.
